Agreed.
I was confusing it with 1973 which also was a miserable time.
BTW, Callaghan was a follower of the then new Hyak and Friedman economic philosophy of the free market.
Basis of the Thatcher revolution.
He was not a socialist.

He was alright sunny Jim…..

You lived through the Thatcher regime, then? 3 million unemployed and 15% interest rates, for starters? Simple answer: yes or no.

And please explain this 'all' that was taken. And please explain this 'nothing' that was left. I will be most interested to see your very detailed axplanation of both...

That interest rate was for about a week when Lamont tried anything to counter the ERM farce. Granted, they were higher than now, but house prices were way lower, and more affordable, than the current generation can aspire to.

North Sea oil revenue was squandered, or rather, spent on your generation. Final Salary pension schemes were the norm, and not just in the public sector. State assets were sold off, (If you see Sid, tell him), again, for the benefit of the generation, (yours) who could afford the £300 for some Gas shares. The entire consumer market was geared to your generation, cos of your spending power, and that continues to this day. Fancy a cheap cruise anytime?

Whilst the current generation of young families and young adults struggle to get out of Heathrow, down, in no small measure, to your generation being advocates of the lunacy and chaos of Brexit.

And for the record, I have benefited hugely from house prices and a FS pension. The latter enabled me to retire early to care for me beloved.

Unlike you, I appreciate that having caught the tail end of the boomers, I was incredibly fortunate.

There was nothing 'golden' about living through the Thatcher era. Anyone who thinks it was is a fool...

Nor through previous Governments when there was a pay freeze, three day week, etc...

How did it effect you? The Thatcher era that is.

I usually stay out of this thread, just enter it for my own curiosity, but regardless of the effect the Thatcher era had on certain people ( and I will admit I didn’t do to badly) the role of Government any Government is to govern for ALL of the people, and this is something Thatcher certainly didn’t do.

Do you REALLY think I'm going to post on a public forum about the privations myself, my wife, and my two young children went through in that era?

Sheesh...

Not really. Details aint needed.

But for the benefit of the debate, (you contributed to) personally, were you and your family dreadfully treated?

My family were lucky, living in the south west, and as a teenager starting in the job market, (in a bank), I dont recall much privation personally. I do recall folk getting mortgages to buy their council house, and the mega number of cheques payable to British Gas etc etc mind.

Mostly from the age group you are/were in. Thats my central point.

Thats a proper fascist policy right there. I thought it would be another 12 months or so before thia sort of policy is promoted but hey ho.

No surprise the knob is from banking sector which has been practising economic fascism in the guise of deregulation for his entire professional career, then hot footed it out into politics when it crashed. Leopards don't change their spots.
