The Nev 'Rallying Call' Sweep...

As annoyed as I am with Neville, this stems from Moyes. He has come out with some corkers in the past, attempting to save face for himself. Our chairman as well.

We had about 8 dodgy seasons in the 90's/early 2000's out of about 40 in the top flight and yet we are 'punching above our weight'. Given that our wages for manager and players are competitive I'd say we were punching our weight.

"Only twice in the last 11 years we've finished outside the top 10, that's a massive achievement for a club like Everton..."

Wait.. .what?

when subs came down the line Gibbo was getting loads of advice to pass on to neville, as he looked upo and across to the far side Skip gave it away ridiculously after failing to control a ball that my 6yo does with ease. the look and headshake spoke volumes.

what he said makes sense theirs alot of so other called big clubs that would have loved to have finished top 10 for last ten years namely blackburn leeds newcastle birmingham wolves all had more money to spend than us yet all got relegated and not all came straight back up!

It's rare I find myself on the opposite side of this debate but I'm fairly sure not all of those clubs spent more than us. Even if they technically did for a year or two it doesn't mean they are bigger -- none of those clubs are going to tap up our players and force through a transfer like a Manchester club or Chelsea could. If a club can't take players we want to keep away from us then I don't think they can be considered "bigger" in any meaningful sense.

Regardless it is pretty much meaningless whether Neville is right or not. It was a stupid thing to say because almost none of the people he is trying to appease want to hear something like that. Even if it were proven empirically true it's not the right time to say it as basically the first public statement of consequence from a player (the captain no less) since a high-profile bad defeat.

If that was green-lit by PR/media relations then they are even more clueless than I thought (and I thought they were pretty clueless to begin with).
