you’re a intelligent man do you not see a difference between a statue celebrating someone and a road they travelled along ? I mean WR Dean has a statue it’s clearly different than the fact that say Suarez walked on the road outside Goodison , the road isn’t celebrating him .

I’m not arguing there are debates to be had but reducing it to a base level “all lives matter though “ or “you can’t change history “ are different than celebrating what’s gone before . I have knowledge of fairly despicable people in history but I wouldn’t expect to see them celebrated . I don’t know about the diversity of your family pete but if you had to walk a grandchild whose ancestors had been trafficked or thrown in the sea by a figure celebrated in a statue It’s not an easy conversation to have . At least in the context of Churchill it’d generate a debate about historical figures being complex but being celebrated for giving money you made from slavery to support only white people Like Colston would surely Be extremely difficult .

Actually I think I would enjoy that conversation, by explaining how the nasty world was a long time ago, but showing that it’s now quite a nice place....Statues can be laughed at, treated with scorn or ignored, but I’m not a big fan of mob destruction.....

I’m not sure how people pulling down a statue is on the same level as winston chuchill purposely starving 3 million people to death

im also not sold on statue vandalism being as bad as racism.

So in the midst of fighting Hitler, Churchill thought ‘I know I’ll purposely starve 3 million Indians‘.....

Aye, he was having a scrap with Hitler, Queensbury rules, and had a little water break to do it. You know Hitler and Churchill never actually went mano a mano don't you?

You can safely ignore anything said before the word "but".

Im a big advocate of national service or something similiar for alot of todays youth - anyone who is from a martial arts or military background will testify to discipline/respect being two of the best things you can instill in a person.

Sadly those qualities are lacking in too many in UK society.

Can I have some reading on this? Would be very interested to read more.

Is it mainly military service you'd use to instil discipline?

Diverting food from India to British soldiers and boosting already plentiful European stockpiles was his choice as were the various other policies which contributed to it. It’s a bit hard to believe these were accidents or innocent mistakes/oversights given how racist he was and how little respect he had for India.

Either way, the point was that I’m not sure some statue vandals are on the same level as racists...

Damn kids and their rock and roll.

Im under 30 so I know fully well the types of idiots knocking about these days.

In society you have 2 types of people:

1. Those brought up

2. Those dragged up

Number 1 is fine as they have been taught correct morals and discipline from their parents/family however number 2 are the scum carrying blades / in and out of prison as they care for nothing but themselves.

Thats exactly why you need programs in place for those in number 2 who no doubt a few of those types were involved in the recent violence at the protests.

I’m not necessarily advocating mob destruction Although I empathise with it . If you pull it down I understand it but if you get nicked you’ve got to deal with the consequences.

the difficult part of the conversation would surely by why the statue is still there now , still ‘celebrating’ the life of a slaver who it describes as wise and virtuous and frankly the ethnicity of the child in that conversation probably does make a difference .

When in history did you not have a minority of youth on a bad path?

I'm over 30 and remember there were loads of them when I was a kid.

My dad is nearly 70 and recalls the same.
