It was British arms he was dealing, so it's alright innit?

Depends on who he is dealings arms for. If the end user is a legitimate government, then it is legal. It may not be moral. The fact that the arms are British made doesn't come into it.

Seems quite a fluid concept doesn't it? Like when America sold arms to bin Laden when he was fighting the Russians. Flogging arms isn't great whomever you flog them to imo, but it's a big industry for Britain.

Same with the Falklands war. A lot of the Argentine navy, including their only aircraft carrier, was ex British navy that we had sold to them after we had finished with them.

It's a big industry for Britain I agree. Maybe we should streamline it so that we only build arms for our own use, but at the same time become self sufficient so we don't buy from other countries. That actually might create jobs in the arms industry whilst ensuring that we don't sell to other countries that may use them to commit atrocities.

I know you won't agree with that by the way Bruce.

I've long since given up expecting the world to be as I would like mate :) Funnily enough, I watched Capek's Bila Nemoc at the weekend, in which a deadly (Chinese) virus is killing people in a country widely believed to be 1930s Germany. A doctor had a cure for it, but would only give it on the condition that the dictator in charge stopped his war mongering ways. Even as an avowed peacenik and Capek fan, the allegory seemed rather too childlike, and failed to represent the murk that so often characterizes these kind of issues.

Just because what someone was doing wasn't illegal, doesn't mean they should be venerated (I'm not saying you do this yourself by the way).

If you think that tearing down statues in the name of re writing the past is in the best interests of everyone. Take a minute to consider what the famous author once wrote in 1949 about a future where people no longer have control.

Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.
George Orwell, 1984

Wake up people.

What's your opinion of the destruction of the Windrush landing cards?

Were you in favour of the invasion of Iraq? If so, what's your opinion of the destruction of all their state records, museums etc

I think you are asking the wrong person there fella so interested to know what your thoughts are, or what trap you are leading me into lol

Personally I'm against all of it, certainly destroying the stuff in Iraq. I was against the Iraq war In hindsight as it has negatively affected Iraq as a country and there was never a clear reason as to go there. Windrush was a very big mistake as well.

Interesting aside, the Belgrano was formerly the USS Pheonix and survived Pearl Harbour.
