If you think that tearing down statues in the name of re writing the past is in the best interests of everyone. Take a minute to consider what the famous author once wrote in 1949 about a future where people no longer have control.

George Orwell, 1984

Wake up people.

DING DING. If you've got 1984 on your bingo card please mark it off now

What are you on about?

An author in 1949 wrote about something that society is choosing to do to itself.

The irony that the book is about a government abusing it's power to that extent. Yet it's the people literally doing that to themselves instead.

I'm on about the tried trope of people trotting out 1984 when it has no relevance and it appears they've not understood it.

But they're not.

No history is being rewritten. Changing the street decorations of a town or the name of a pub doesn't rewrite history.

Also, imagine trying to compare something to 1984 apart from the government bit. The people are 'literally' doing what? Being Big Brother?

So destroying records hasn't happened?

Changing statues (loose reference) and changing street names isn't what this thread is about?

You are taking the source material too literal. It's about changing society to a new image which is very much relevant to this thread. Which yes the people are wanting to do.

And yes it's rewriting history when you hold the past to the same standards as today and then judge them accordingly before altering the perspective to your current day version.

What records are you talking about? Unless you mean Windrush which is a different topic to this altogether.

I'm sorry, but you really haven't got your head around quite a simple book. The changing statues and street names is about erasing the names of past heroes who are now enemies of the state. This has not happened here, names are not being changed to erase them, it's to stop celebrating them. And it's an incredibly small thing, it's not as big as people are making it.

The book is very much not about 'changing society to a new image' it is very much about an authoritarian government lying to and controlling their citizens through rewriting of history and language. It is not members of the public saying they want a different street decoration.

That is not rewriting history, that is rethinking history. If the accepted history is that Pele is the greatest player of all time but you in fact thing he was just good but not that good it is not rewriting history to say this or to encourage another way to look at his career.

Why do people think removing statues is obscuring history? In all of the incidents I’ve seen they have resulted in people knowing more about the person concerned, not less.

Indeed, for those today. But for younger people and tomorrow’s generation there will be no statue and no questions about who or what. The statue removal is a selfish act by probably the most selfish generation ever to grace our planet.....

But it wasn’t the Baby Boomer generation that did it?
Odd that you think if Churchill’s statue got remove no one would learn about him
