No one said to close it down, but why should the majority, who don't use it, have to pay for it. You don't pay for flights you don't take......

Yes we do. In fact Heathrow's mooted expansion is going to cost billions in terms of government support, both directly for the airport and indirectly for all the transport links that would need upgrading.

But that's not most people. It's the same people who do this most days of the year, the rest of us don't get on a train from one year to the next. If you want a better rail service then pay for it.....

You have no idea if that's true or not, unless you've collected data. All that shows is that it's utilised

The majority of people in the UK do not use the railway. Nationalising it just means that the majority, who do not use it, now have to pay for it. Whether prices or services go up or down, why should people be forced to pay for something they do not use ?.......

It's a fair point and I can't really argue with that.

I suppose if it were nationalised (or better services were able to be provided) maybe more people would use it? And if they did it would help alleviate crippling traffic that blights businesses in the south east?

Whatever the solution is though, I am deeply troubled as a tax payer paying exorbitant fees to these companies to run what amounts to a pretty appalling service where I live. There seems to be a complete lack of accountability, people have ended up losing jobs as a result of it and yet companies have made lots of profits off it. It is a South East issue which I appreciate not everyone will have a lot of sympathy for, but down this way mate it's a complete faff. I'm not sure nationalisation solves everything but serious changes are needed.

Loving the bigot meltdown at the releasing of a good socialist manifesto. Enjoying very much.

I would love a good socialist manifesto, yet to see it though. The wish list that Corbyn has produced is off the charts, do you think he can do all that in the course of one parliament without bankrupting the country?

Because of that he may as well have taken a dump on a piece of paper.

Start with nationalising the railways, capping profits of the utilities and a few other deliverable wins that people can get behind without scaring away businesses and well to do people. Do that well then in subsequent campaigns then he can move on to the other more lefty policies.

I'd love the data for that if you've got it handy, and also how our current network/service compares with that under BR.

I'll have a look for you mate. I'm sure I read the fares paid in Germany/France/Spain are a fraction of what we pay. I thought that seemed common knowledge?

As for the service I am basing much of my prognosis on the south east and particularly southern rail. I haven't figured to hand but I'd be amazed if many other rails franchises anywhere in the world have had as many cancellations. I've had meetings in London missed because the train stopped half way.

I'll have a look for some figures, but are you in disagreement with the general substance of the post?

I agree that it needs another shake up, but just putting the cost back onto the general taxpayer will only make it worse.....

Fantastic article here in response to the Labour supporters who mindlessly drone on that their policies are "fully costed" as if that actually means something. The sums don't even come remotely close to adding up. And they don't even care. Any Labour supporter thinking this is somehow a good manifesto should take just 5 mins out of their time to read this.

Where did I say that? It's not a Labour policy for teenagers to get pregnant. The side effect of their policy is that youths know they can 'Have a baby and get a house.' It was a big problem locally a few years ago as young girls were under that impression.
Less than 2% of single parents are teenage,66 % of single parents are in work, the average age of a single parent is 38 so it doesnt quite add up to vast amounts of young girls taking housing does it
