Current Affairs The Labour Party

This is a question that, without descending into whataboutery, can be asked about every Labour leader though- including Blair (who was the last Labour leader to be in charge of the party when an arguably anti Semitic attack advert was put out).

Indeed it’s vital to ask the question because just asking it disproves one of the main criticisms of Corbyn over AS (that it only became a problem after his election as leader).

yeah, I don’t think it did become a problem because of him

but, y’know, Everton’s tosh players weren’t a problem because of Brands, but Brands hasn’t managed to deal with them

lol Only know a couple of members of momentum myself and they run and deliver food parcels to some of the most deprived areas in the country. Places a member of the Conservatives will never ever visit or even know about.
I mean you could accuse them of being ‘bleeding heart liberals’ but you’d have to pay me significant amounts of cash to go into some of the sink estates they deliver to.
The tories have brought us brexit, slashed money for poor people and fostered a growing movement of xenophobia. They’ve deflected blame from the upper echelons of our society and focussed people’s anger largely onto immigrants. What have the far left done to match your equivalence?

My father in law votes Tory but tbf he donates money to charity and does numerous fundraisers in his local to help those in need (haven't a clue why he votes Tory like never asked).

There are decent folk at grassroots level on both sides however the further up the chain you go the more ideological driven shysters you tend to find.

The higher echelons of Momentum and their ilk have given us a decade of Tories and driven the working class into the hands of the likes of Farage/Johnson with their condescending attitude of "if you aint one of us you're a red tory/gammon/racist/capitalist fool etc.

They aint any better than the Conservatives themselves in my eyes. Im centre left but I want nothing to do with the fringe lunatics who are trying to take us into the realms of far left vs far right politics - its bad enough in the US dont want it happening here.

ha ha ha. As if the US has anywhere close to any far left party or any far left appearing anywhere in the media.

Do you honestly think that a Labour Party with Gordon Brown at the helm was in thrall to the 'higher echelons of Momentum and their ilk'? Or with Ed Milliband?

Momentum haven’t even been going for a decade so it’s a bit of a stretch to blame them for Brown and Milliband losing their elections.

I don’t think so. They’ve been campaigning against benefit cuts for example when I doubt many tories would be able to tell you the fundamental flaws of universal credit.
This perpetuated notion that they’re both as bad as each other is ridiculous in my opinion and one that suits the ruling classes nicely.

In the US the anti fascists are as bad as the fascists apparently. I always like that analogy, whilst injecting more bleach.

We didnt qualify for UC cos I have the massive sum of £250 pw in pension income. Despite the fact that I have saved the NHS/Social Services £0000's by retiring early to care for Mrs R at home. Otherwise she would be in one of their care still.

The non means tested welfare isnt too bad in all honesty. Once you actually navigate the system.

Been going 5 years isn’t it and all I’m seeing on their website is 1970’s sixth form politics, very worthy, but ultimately won’t get you into power. Don’t know whether it is on this thread or another but someone stated the Conservative party know how to win and that’s what matters. You can cry and stamp you’re feet as much as you want but if you’re not in the game you can‘t influence it. I am a labour voter but the desire for internal conflict is tiresome.

You’re right but there should always be a place for that type of politics within the Labour Party.

My fear is starmer wants rid of anything to do with that.

He’s spoken of wanting labour to be a broad church and to bring unity to the party but we’re seeing the opposite of that.

The Labour Party should cover a wide range of politics and the people within it need to stop the infighting because ones a bit of a socialist and the other is a bit of a liberal.

Obviously you have to have the capabilities to do so as well. A surprising amount of people can’t read or write for example.

On your fears re Starmer, then let Momentum strike out on their own. If they think they can take the people and more importantly the unions with them then stop “hiding“ inside the LP. Like your final sentence.

Ah yes, class struggle always works best when the working class are divided
