I'm not sure how anybody could take the political opinion of a brexiteer seriously ever again, it's pretty much concrete evidence that they are either lazy, ignorant or just frothingly bigoted to a point of self harm and should be ignored.

And yet somehow, John Redwood still gets paid to churn our articles like this for the membership:

The Vauxhall plant closure is obviously a huge deal for the town, it's one of the biggest single employers here and most of us probably know someone affected. I've got a mate of about 20 years who is in a senior QA role there, he's recently moved out of the town to get on the property ladder (and also getting married soon) so is in no rush to relocate again to get up nearer to (most of) you guys to work at Ellesmere Port.

Can't pin it on Labour though. And I'm sure Sir Keir, who I heard somewhere was the son of a toolmaker, is concerned about losing any industry.

Absolutely agree these people exist however I don't think they should just be let be at all.

Welfare should not be a lifestyle choice and taxpayers shouldn't pick up the bill for the bone idle.
Long term unemployed get tonnes of resources thrown at them over the course of years. Not just DWP but other charities and institutions get involved.

Problem is, if a 40 year old guy has never worked in his life, there is almost nothing you can do to get them working and the only way you could, would be an extreme hand holding exercise that would take up even more time and money and the chance of long term success are slim. If someone doesn’t want to work there’s very little can be done. Certainly within the current framework.

Some people are used to living on the very edges of extreme poverty and for a multitude of different reasons they prefer this to the idea of working. The more you try to force them into employment the more they will push back. People don’t like to hear it but it would be better for everyone to take a less hands on role and let people make their own choices.

Best to concentrate resources on short term unemployed to try and stop them becoming long term and people who want to develop skills and are actively seeking employment.

Nope.

It comes from experience working in the system and being part of teams that worked with people claiming benefits.

There are people who simply do not want to work and are perfectly happy claiming welfare.

Should just let these people be instead of forcing them into work. Countless governments have tried to force people back into work who don’t have the desire to and it’s created a system that doesn’t help the ones who do.

You’re naive in thinking these people don’t exist.

FFS, that's a nice attitude you've had toward your clients. You were 'working' with them but thinking that they were all lazy shiftless scumbags.

Nice to know.

Lol.

Stop twisting my words.

I actually have a lot of empathy with them as I think they’re mainly products of the environment they grew up in.

I don’t think people who don’t want to work are scumbags, but it seems like you do from what you’re posting.

It's a struggle to understand what Labour are doing. Anybody who has followed DWP/unemployment policies for years would realise the white paper ideas are too flimsy and the funding is too miniscule to help. Let's not forget the last Labour government had in place provisions to place unemployed people on training and work experience - it cost billions and led to things like the A4E Scandal. The increase in part time roles, gig economy and zero hour contracts, alongside introduction of UC, rendered them obsolete in their old form.

There's no serious money being channeled into training, it just reads like a cruel policy designed to move the inactive with health issues into the Look For Work category. And 18-21 year old jobseekers to work full time hours for benefit level pay.

As for the DWP managing this reform using AI? It's going to cause a lot of distress and probably deaths when it takes wrong decisions and the DWP doesn't bother to use humans to review the decisions. Doesn't seem like Labour have considered what happens when a system goes wrong such as Post Office.

Perhaps they are just planning 5 years then semi retire on lucrative dinner circut. This group of the electorate they are attacking which i work closely with already astound me with their support for Parties like Reform. And when you read Paramedics are seriously considering voting the same way, Labour and its unwavering support need to give its head a wobble.

I completely agree mate. There are real world consequences to this. Its frightening. Kendall is well out of her depth. She's a low quality politician and the fact that Starmer has left her in charge of overhauling a very sensitive area like the unemployed young underlines that they really dont give a flying one.

I said yesterday that the underlying politics of this is to send out a message to business that as well as taxing them (in a one off tax event btw, and never to be repeated) they will tackle the issue of a dwindling reserve army of labour that businesses MUST have to be able to exploit workers effectively. That's all the more important when the Starmer Gang have committed themselves to reducing migrant numbers before the next election.

This is a social calamity about to unwind.

With respect Dave, you accuse someone of generalising when that’s all you’ve done, and continue to do, with your rants about the WFA for pensioners.
How have I done that? Oh yeah, by not including all the 'rich' pensioners like you do.

FFS.

Yeah, I've just seen your idea of 'empathy': "they simply do not want to work and are perfectly happy claiming welfare".

With friends like you, eh...
