Huge pub in a large conurbation that’s part of Amber Taverns, a pub group with a turnover of over £95million and an Operating profit of over £15million. Not quite an equal comparison….
+ a lot of that will be coming via the local Cash+Carry. Paying Brewers prices that would be closed in a week. Whether pubs are part of a smallish chain like Amber Taverns, a monster like Stonegate or a single operator, the same objectives apply and they’re all cost driven.
The consumption of draft beer in the on trade has been in free fall since 1970. The decline in manual labour, the greater awareness of health issues, the impact of wines and spirits, greater leisure choice, the smoking ban have all had a massive impact.
Yet every time the budget comes around Pubs get a special pleading, often it’s heard (repeated freezing of beer duty for example). We are told repeatedly that pubs are a part of the community, so they are; like the NHS, buses, disabled people, working people, carers and more. They are not set in aspic. The triple lock has to stay funded, income tax band unfreezing needs to be funded. Pubs, fabulous an institution though they are, would not be top of my priority list.
