A piece in that Tory rag The Guardian…

“Let me caveat what I am about to say with a reminder that I have been a Labour loyalist, in government and opposition, for 45 years. I oppose our proposal to cut the winter fuel allowance. This is not factional, or self-centred, but comes from a sincere belief that it will be a terrible blunder. Today’s price cap rise by Ofgem, which will increase the average energy bill in Britain by 10% to £1,717, makes reversing the decision to cut the allowance all the more urgent.
I understand the reasoning behind the cut – it seems patently wrong that those who clearly do not need it still receive it – but the speed with which we plan to introduce this change means there will be a devastating impact on hundreds of thousands of poorer pensioners who are not already on pension credit. Take-up for pension credit has never been close to 100% – it stands at a meagre 63% on the most recent figures (2022) and failed to rise above 66% for the last decade – and the lack of notice also means no pensioner has had the chance to save during the year to try to compensate.”…….

The price cap rise is still well below what it was under the Tories, and the Ukraine war is still going on (I mean, wasn’t that the reason for every price rise for the last 2 years of Tory rule), yet it’s being reported as if Labour are solely responsible - after less than 2 months in office - for this recent rise.

Reckon the government can deal with not fit for purpose regulators like Ofgem and Ofcom, surely?

Households will begin the run-up to winter with a 10% increase in their energy bills after the industry regulator increased its cap on energy prices from October.

Under the new price cap, the average annual energy bill will rise to £1,717 a year for gas and electricity, up £149 from its current level of £1,568, which has been in place since July.

If Sunak hadn’t stabbed him in the back he’d still be PM…..

Pete, I'm afraid people like you never learn, even when overwhelming evidence suggests otherwise.

He wouldn't. The public hate him. As can be seen by the election result. He's despised. He and the Tories were never winning in 2024, despite what clueless fools tried to tell us.

You suffered the worst election result of a sitting government in the history of Britain. If you can't learn after that, you will never learn I'm afraid.

Boris was forecast to be in for ten years too.....

Being a clown cost him - Starmer has broken no more austerity on benefits in 2 weeks - in fact he was going one step further to take the billions of contracts of Atos & American companies who are on productivity bonuses to kick the sick off any benefits - getting rid of Work capability assessments would have saved billions ?
What did we get - nothing - Look I agree no well off pensioners should get the fuel allowance - but to means test it so low & then fuel is going up 12 % in the Autumn - petrol is forecast to go up unfairly - 5 p a litre - not a very socialist policy is it ?

Even the Tories & I hate them helped everyone when the Ukraine war started with a heating grant for everyone - FGS Starmer is not socialism, he is a Tory in a red rosette - Reeves is an ex Banker who will not hammer the Bankers Bonuses ?

I was fooled to put my faith in this lot !

Yes "Boris" was predicted to be, by complete un utter fools who have have no idea of politics. Anybody who felt that's opinion should be discarded.

I pointed out to those people he wouldn't. That he would be an electoral disaster for the Conservatives, once he was not facing a referendum on Brexit. And look who was proven correct.

And when those people say Labour won't be in for a generation +, they are also wrong. The Tories are finished, their voters are dying off.

Meant here (forum )as well elsewhere, fair few were never naive to believe the hyperbolic lies round Johnson. The biggest lie was he could talent spot and surround himself with the best, look how that turned out. From Truss Cummings Sunak, the best apparently l.

The mythology built around Johnson was truly astonishing.

If you ask anybody who has worked with him, they all said the same thing. He would crash and burn. He's a knob, and the public soon saw that.

Labour aren’t having 30 years of power mate.

This doesn’t happen in a democracy.

They could still easily lose the next election.

The current political climate is impossible to predict.

Of course it happens. And the fact it hasn't happened here, doesn't mean it cant.

The maths is simple, the Tories are a long long way back. There is zero chance they come back at the next election. It's it easy for them to lose that election at all.

If the Tories move to the centre, and have a massive purge, they may get back in in 20-30 years. If not Labour will.be governing indefinitely.

Yes "Boris" was predicted to be,

I don't think it was a prediction (at least by any sensible commentator), my recollection was that he was reported saying he wanted 10 years, to "outlast Thatcher". This was a few months after the Hartlepool byelection win in 2021 (a result which reportedly had Starmer considering quitting). About 9 months later, he was out.
