All of which was supported by Labour, who indeed wanted furlough to go on for longer……
The problem wasnt the furlough and you know it.

The problem was the vast sums that were either wasted or bunged to their mates.

But dont worry, no doubt the enquiry will follow the money and with any luck a few people will do some jail time.

Sunak 9 billion still owning on his furlough scheme which he got conned on - plus 1.5 billion on COVID protective gear not usable - contracts not tendered just given to his mates .....

Pete you can’t believe this last government had laid all the cards on the table surely? As far as I’m aware the OBR weren’t privy to everything. Truss didn’t even listen to them for her budget which has goosed anyone with a mortgage.

We couldn’t trust them to run a school tuck shop, and they will have all kinds of skeletons in the closet, as Labour would have too to be fair.

I don’t mind paying a bit more tax if it means public services are funded properly either.

I think it’s one of timing not obfuscation. The OBR by law see all the numbers. I could accept that maybe they were out by a couple of months but the numbers are available and no spinning by Labour can change that.

The OBR is not the government, they can advise, but ultimately it’s down to the PM and cabinet.

If public services improve I’m all for it. Merely giving the public sector an above average and above inflation pay rise will not improve what we have, it will merely cost more money for the same….

I agree that we got ripped off. Our own staff in the pub were hugely grateful for furlough as no doubt were millions of others. The problems were caused by certain businesses who deliberately set out to rob us. I fully support full investigations of them all, and to Sunak’s shame he didn’t pursue it. I would love to see these guys in prison, no argument from me…..

The thing is though Pete the public sector haven’t been getting any worthwhile pay rises for years and it’s become a retention and recruitment issue on the Tory watch. It’s probably better pay to work in an office now than be a nurse etc with half the stress.

The government found money to give the Ulster Unionists propping them up and to waste on the Covid Track and Trace, the PPE that didn’t work, all of which was doled out to their mates. That was our money.

Track and Trace was the single biggest complete waste of money I’ve ever seen. I decried it at the time, even though a few on here defended doing it… but there’s nothing we can do about that. I think it would have been sensible to give the public sector the current inflation rise of 2% and gradually increase it. But to announce 5% or whatever so soon, smacks of looking after their paymasters. The poor old private sector by comparison falls further behind the public sector every year. Advise kids to join the public sector, get better pay and better pensions. Meanwhile the private sector which actually generates money will as always fall behind once more…..

I see what you are saying Pete, but for example my wife is a primary school teacher and has been for 8 years. She has a real terms pay cut because of inflation etc.

I work in the private sector and my pay has gone up a lot more than hers in that time. Her pension is good as it should be, but the here and now is what will make people join or stay in the profession.

She stay because it’s her vocation but her stress levels are through the roof. They need to pay well to attract people and keep them.

I completely agree about teachers pay, it’s a tough job and seems to get harder each year. I used to be a school governor many years ago and saw the stress at an individual level, indeed a friend of mine succumbed to the stress and it eventually killed her. I also have no problem with pay rises for nurses and junior medics. My issue is with the well paid pen pushers, many of whom in the higher echelons of the NHS and CS contribute very little for the pay they receive…..

Yeah that’s a fair point Pete. I couldn’t say as I’m not that clued up, but it does sound like there is a lot of middle management, when we really would be better served having more well paid frontline staff.

Same in my line of work too come to think of it. We need more doers than spreadsheets.

Sorry to hear about your friend that’s awful. ☹️. There is so much stress in teaching.

You think cutting expenditure is the same as Keynesianism?

Lol.

Every single post underlines how ropey you are.
Keynes was quite clear. He advocated running a deficit during recessions, with that deficit paid for by a surplus during growth periods. Nowadays, governments run deficits regardless, it's just a matter of how big it is. It's not like you to not know the things you parrot.

As said a few weeks back: they'll continue with austerity...

The mugs who voted for this lot will continue to repent at leisure.
Not really a suprise to those that were paying attention.

Your Tory mates gave all the money to their mates and wasted it.

Its gonna take time to grow the economy, but hey, I guess you must rate Labour highly if you thought it was gonna take 5 weeks.
