So the softening up process ‘worst set of accounts since WW2’ and ‘we’ve discovered a £20Bn black hole which we didn’t know about’ will culminate in the new Chancellor telling us all that tough decisions (tax rises) will have to take place in the next budget. Even though the numbers have been made available by the OBR for 14 years it’s come as ‘a complete shock’. Anyway, enjoy the tax rises and the hit to your future pension funds (of course any pension cap doesn’t apply to Starmer, amazing that isn’t it). Monday should be fun when this con is finally admitted to……
Are you saying that the Conservatives misled the OB to the tune of 20 billion? Seems like a drop in the ocean compared to the rest of the black hole that is the UK's finances.

Labour have some difficult decisions to make about how to repair the country's economy and I doubt many people are going to be happy about whatever they do. If they go down the same route as the Conservatives and worsen the economy then is the time for criticism instead of worrying about some hypothetical scenarios made to induce panic.

But Pete, Labour could use the Tory playbook and have another 13 3/4 years to say it was left in rag order by the Tories.

FFS they were even saying they were the party for change in the election.

I think the difference being that the OBR didn’t exist under the last Labour government and the numbers were only known by Blair/Brown and co. It’s totally different now, all the numbers and facts are in the public domain for anyone to see. This ‘what a shock’ is pure BS, basically lying and taking everyone as fools. If Labour want to tax and spend on its usual customers in the public sector, then fine just say so and get on with it, there’s no need to pretend and peddle lies within days of taking office……

I am not saying the OBR had been misled by anybody, the numbers are available to all. I’m saying that Starmer and co are blatantly lying by saying they didn’t know, and that their manifesto was ‘fully costed’ which is a deliberate falsehood…..not a good start imo……

Loads of stuff is publicly available, but the government will now know much more detail then before. They’ll now have been briefed on detailed gaps and backlogs, money tied up in terrible procurement contracts, IT projects which are failing and overspent etc etc.

Thank god the Tories didn’t get in, and further hammer the budget by insane tax giveaways just to keep their core support happy, while the countries’ services and infrastructure collapsed.

This post was brought to you by the letter "I", for irony.

You are right. Labour should have taken a more pessimistic approach to the dire straits that the cons had left the country in.

I suspect that it was a deliberate falsehood as well. They did not get much of a grilling over their claims before the election. At least didn't put it on the side of a bus!

Pete you can’t believe this last government had laid all the cards on the table surely? As far as I’m aware the OBR weren’t privy to everything. Truss didn’t even listen to them for her budget which has goosed anyone with a mortgage.

We couldn’t trust them to run a school tuck shop, and they will have all kinds of skeletons in the closet, as Labour would have too to be fair.

I don’t mind paying a bit more tax if it means public services are funded properly either.

Sunak 9 billion still owning on his furlough scheme which he got conned on - plus 1.5 billion on COVID protective gear not usable - contracts not tendered just given to his mates .....

Yeah, it's almost like those banks the tax payer bailed out and then suffered for have been profiteering when they saw a chance to shaft the very people already hammered by cameron and osborne's selective austerity.

At least with a school tuck shop there is a fiscal barrier with how far into the red you can sink it, the vip lane abuses and bounce back business fraud were a means to fiddle the books on a scale never before witnessed.

Point the finger and shout and abuse Rayner for an alleged impropriety over fifteen hundred quid of capital gains.

And the thickest, most gammon, flag shagging, alright Jack's lapped it up with gusto.

I do, I'm sick of paying more and more on my income and then on every bill I pay and on every penny I spend on everything else. Yet, the public services dwindle.

All of which was supported by Labour, who indeed wanted furlough to go on for longer……
