She gave a good Political statement undermined by ‘we can’t spend money we do not have’, before announcing Pay increases for the public sector. She also looked decidedly sheepish while Hunt ripped apart the black hole numbers which turned out to be costs due to her own choices. Anyway it was all fully expected and sets her up for the inevitable tax increases to be announced at the end of October. So it’s pay rises for public sector, partly paid for by the abolition of the pensioner winter fuel payments so far…..

just right, they were getting 1 and 2% rises at best when inflation was in double figures

Was thinking about this. Don't HMRC have a record of everyone's income for the tax year? So, a cut off point could be had?

As I say, was thinking about it, not too deeply mind.
They manage to means test working benefits very quickly and efficiently. The chancellor mentioned that there will be publicity about how to get these credits/benefits instead etc. No-one who actually needs the winter fuel should miss out.

I’m sure you are right, but it can get complicated when people have partners/married etc. You also get situations where there are actual differences in Winter weather requiring differing costs, I.e. someone in the north of Scotland versus Bournemouth. Deciding what is ‘fair’ should have been thought through and discussed with charities like Help the Aged to get it right and not just bounced through a few weeks after entering office. Brown ruined private pensions, looks like Reeves is going to finish the job. Feels like giving money to your own supporters while removing it from those who may not support you…

10 million pensioners to their winter fuel payments taken off them. This lot are out Torying the Tories

…..I’m an OAP and Mrs Eggs joins the ranks in October. It’s a bit daft that we get winter fuel allowance and whilst I appreciate there’s plenty who struggle, my understanding is those on Pensioner Credit will still get the payment.

Most ain't.

Nearly £30,000 p/a for a retired couple is the average. I suppose it depends if you have housing (and caring) costs on top of that
