Current Affairs The Labour Party

The last three elections were contested by a leadership of Miliband leading a centre-ground shadow cabinet in 2015, then a centre-left/Corbynista shadow cabinet in 2017 which for the first time since Blair in 2001 got Labour's vote above 10 million by outstripping that by 3 milllion more votes (13 million votes is something Starmer wont get) making them an electoral force again. And though the last election in 2019 was a leadership of centre-left/Corbynistas, that was a defeat built on a practical referendum over Brexit which Starmer was the architect of in the LP with his insistence of dragging the party to a position of opposition to Brexit where he knew Labour voters would desert the party in droves....which was ultimately down to weak leadership from Corbyn, of course.

It's not true to say the left in the party handed the Tories three victories.
They went into those GE's agaist the worst Tory party ever and got hammerd .
Everybody knew it would happen as well.
Waste of space the lot of them.
Now standing as independents in the next one they are tory enabling rats .
On par with kenwright saying he was the greatest Evertonian ever while ruining the club, these lot of of super socialist gave the tories power.

Hey, you're not allowed to speak to the Corbyn crew like that! They'll get upset.

No they didn't. They went in against a populist Tory Party on both occasions pumped up by the politics of Brexit and with the whole of the British media behind them.

It's only Starmer who;s pushing at an open door since the collapse of the Tories over scandals and the recognition by business leaders and the media that the Tories are now a busted flush and that a right wing led 'Labour' Party should face no opposition from them....in fact, should be given encouragement from them.

What he said is completley wrong.

They went up against Populism with one issue on the table in Brexit.

They were always onto a loser. Corbyn was an issue, I saw it myself in Barrow in Furness, but a lot of it was based on lies.

It was a brexit election. Lets not pretend otherwise.

….i refer you to his Wiko page to see what an intellect he had, including as a very young man his key role in bringing Blair to power.

The thing that always stood out for me was an interview he did when Tim Marshall was a Sky reporter. Marshall really knows his stuff when it comes to foreign affairs, it’s his big thing and he asked Milliband about a citizen who had been killed (maybe in Afghanistan). Marshall got the individuals name wrong, Milliband didn’t obviously correct him but he knew the detail even down to the street corner where the incident happened.

Marshall immediately thanked him for correcting him in a way that was far from demeaning or arrogant. Such a class act was David Milliband, that moment always stayed with me, he was a Foreign Secretary who knew and cared about his brief and was a huge loss to the Labour Party.

“He remembered someone’s name once”

If no one from a minority background stands a chance of getting near a leadership position and you don't think thats a problem fair enough
We recently had a UK Government chancellor from a minority background who crashed the economy, a Scottish First Minister from a minority background who lasted barely more than a year and a Welsh First Minister from a minority background who will probably be gone within months of taking office

Some bad revisionism this.

The Tories in 2019 had more money than they’ve ever had in a GE campaign, more support from the press (including the BBC and ITV) than they’d had since Chamberlain’s day, more support from traitors within Labour (two of whom were pretty clearly ennobled for their betrayal), and they had people like the Archbishop of Canterbury doing around suggesting that voting Labour was wrong. They even had their own opposition (the Brexit Party) stand down for the election.

In short they had every advantage it was possible to have, including from mugs on here who believed all the crap they were told.

are you saying minority people are all incompetent or pointing out other parties leadership are far more diverse than labour?

They had tories infighting. Austerity, untold tory sleaze by the minutes .
And we're unelectable and running a party within a party that when it came to the ballot box was firmly put in it place, as most of us knew it would.
Ps what was there stance on brexit nobody knew for sure that turned into a great strategy.

Boris was the winner. He's extremely popular amongst the electorate.

Even today the tories will lose votes because Sunak backstabbed him.

People don't care about austerity, sleaze and scandal. They like a joly, rotund man who "says it how it is"

Labour couldn't compete with that and Bexit left them nowhere to go.

Also add in a tory party run by Dominic Cummings infiltrating the algorithms.

Who was the Brexit shadow minister at the time?

It was the promise of get Brexit done that won the election. The nation was weary of all the infighting and constant political turmoil. Even lots of remainers wanted the noise to stop. We all knew Johnson would be a disaster but the electorate fell for it. Not to mention the ongoing campaign of sabotage from the right of the Labour Party. They’d rather the Tories won than the Corbyn Labour Party. Some of them have been rewarded handsomely for their betrayal. You know who they are.
