He didn't have to quit.…David quit after losing the leadership election to his brother. A ridiculous situation. David was an outstanding MP & Minister, the party lost a bright light when he vacated Westminister.
Labour MPs have to predominantly select its leader to avoid it becoming unelectable.
He didn't have to quit.
I think at the time, too, David was still too contaminated by his closeness with Blair and the Iraq war. People seem to forget this.
It'll never catch on.Imagine a world in which the local CLP runs a democratic selection process.
He spat his dummy out and was shown up to be a petulant child. He didn't have to quit.
I think at the time of that Leadership election, too, David was still too contaminated by his closeness with Blair and the Iraq war. People seem to forget this.
I also think it's far from a given that he'd have fared any better than his brother did.

I like Ed Miliband. Never really took to him when he was leader but seemed more comfortable in his own skin afterwards.Could eat bacon sandwich with decorum.
He is as far as I am concerned , that lot gave the tories the last three elections on a plate, Corbyn, Abbott ect.Starmer is clearly just getting rid of the dangerous, the unsavoury and the nutters. Am I rite?????? Lads?????
His brother is smarter.I like Ed Miliband. Never really took to him when he was leader but seemed more comfortable in his own skin afterwards.
Should have waited to run for leader in hindsight I think
Aye, the entrysts like Corbyns commie pal Murray will keep stirring the pot. These sorts have been and are a gift to the tory's.….the other issue Starmer needs to address is ensuring Labour MPs select the leader or at least select 2 candidates that the membership chose from. We can never return to the members selecting another Corbyn to take Labour into the political wilderness.
To think the Party lost outstanding MPs and potential leaders like David Milliband and Andy Burnham due to the ridiculous member selections. It can’t be allowed to happen again.
erm...mate, about all that...He is as far as I am concerned , that lot gave the tories the last three elections on a plate, Corbyn, Abbott ect.
Now when we have a real chance of getting rid of the swines they are making waves and putting there personal interests above the parties election to government,
No time for anybody who gets in the way of getting rid of the tories or formally handed them power on a plate.
There's this account on here, you might say a bit contrary....He is as far as I am concerned , that lot gave the tories the last three elections on a plate, Corbyn, Abbott ect.

The last three elections were contested by a leadership of Miliband leading a centre-ground shadow cabinet in 2015, then a centre-left/Corbynista shadow cabinet in 2017 which for the first time since Blair in 2001 got Labour's vote above 10 million by outstripping that by 3 milllion more votes (13 million votes is something Starmer wont get) making them an electoral force again. And though the last election in 2019 was a leadership of centre-left/Corbynistas, that was a defeat built on a practical referendum over Brexit which Starmer was the architect of in the LP with his insistence of dragging the party to a position of opposition to Brexit where he knew Labour voters would desert the party in droves....which was ultimately down to weak leadership from Corbyn, of course. He is as far as I am concerned , that lot gave the tories the last three elections on a plate, Corbyn, Abbott ect.
