Current Affairs The Labour Party

To be honest Pete, he appeals to members of the party more than the wider electorate ,
I haven't seen any sign of him making in roads to the voters he would need to swing towards labour,
Saying that all of that it's not full down to him.

Certainly not. He did really well at the last vote and if the election had gone on for another few weeks he probably would have won. But I can’t see him offering anything new, or doing any better, and indeed May for all her faults and errors looks more like a leader......

The more I think of it, the sillier Corbyn calling this Vote of Confidence seems.

It is totally a forlorn hope......with no chance if winning.

Tonight theTory party should be in a state of flux, saddled with a lame duck leader they despise but cannot get shot off because their plot failed last month.

Instead all the talk is of the Tories and their useful idiots in the DUP rallying round and keeping her in situ as the Brexit fiasco rumbles on and ever on.

Tonight May looked like a chump.

Tomorrow night Corbyn will look like a chump.

He has ignored the Napoleon diktat and ridden straight to May’s rescue.

He has got too. DUP and ERG who voted against May flag ship policy last night will look as self serving if they now back her. Hiding behind a political dead PM is not a good look, the lack of danglies... Too scared to put their person in front of the electorate. But Corbyn can challenge as much as he likes he is not restricted as Mays own party or ERGs.

Some of the political chat here is beyond reason. Corbyn had to call a no confidence vote after the biggest Government defeat in modern times. He has to try that as part of Labours policy agreed at conference.

If the DUP, the ERG and the Soubrys of this world vote confidence in a Government that has just been beaten by 230 on their flagship policy then the messages they will send will be very clear; nothing you lot say, or do, or suffer, trumps us being in charge. Nothing that the rebels want - a second vote, no deal or Canada / Norway - is worth losing power over.

When this goes wrong, and it will very quickly, the backlash on them will be massive.

Jesus, what utter wham.

People will not back Corbyn as it’s not actually evident what would change. We’d still be in the same utter mess and we’d have 72 days to have an election AND sort out a new deal.

Again, whichever Labour MP was on 5 live last night was brutally honest. It’s a stab at trying to get power, which as MPs in this situation they are more than entitled to, but the real work needs to be done on what happens next.

This is another sideshow created by the political classes at a time when we don’t need them. What last night showed was the importance of cross party cooperation, including those in power who are sympathetic. Time for more of it, not partisan games.

... and you've seen much evidence of that from Theresa May have you? No involvement of Labour in these talks, none for the SNP, the Greens or Plaid and it seems (based on his question at PMQs) that Cable hasn't been spoken to yet either. So "cross party cooperation" with this PM means talking to the DUP and possibly sending Gavin Barwell to talk at people.

Also a vote of no confidence would not result in a general election automatically; it would result in a 14 day period where the Commons could try and come up with a government - you know, actual cross party cooperation on this issue - and if that could not happen there would be an election.

If anyone wants anything other than this deal, May has to be gotten rid of. Nothing else will happen otherwise.

Not rejoicing at anyone’s death. Just pointing out that the the elderly generation were more likely to vote leave, and there will now be less of them. Unpalatable, but true. Young people are more likely to vote Remain, and there will now be more of them eligible to vote, which compounds the effect.

I haven’t seen any polls which suggest Leave would still win, but maybe I just haven’t looked hard enough.

Supposedly there has been a very small swing in the polls to remain, but not enough to make a difference.

Jeremy Corbyn says he looks forward to testing the public opinion in a general election, which he "truly believes" would be the best outcome for this country.

"The scale of the crisis means we need a government with a fresh mandate," he adds, noting that a general election would give a new start to Brexit negotiations.

He argues that a prime minister who is confident that she has a good Brexit deal and has prevented the country from injustices "should have nothing to fear."

So even then there's NOTHING in what Corbyn says that suggests he wants to work with anyone else. It's trading one idiot for the next.

The Prime Minister is the one who said there would be cross party talks. You said you’d hope politicians would come together to solve this. Somehow you’ve got to the point of view that it’s Corbyns fault Theresa May, the Prime Minister, isn’t conducting cross party talks.

It’s an odd stance to take, I think.

We're all pretending that Brexit is the sole problem the country faces.

Pure ignorance.

More than a bit patronising that mate. Everyone is well aware of all sorts of issues the UK has, its just that Brexit has kind of taken centre stage at the moment.
