Overseas military bases of the United Kingdom enable the British Armed Forces to conduct expeditionary warfare and maintain a forward presence. Bases tend to be located in or near areas of strategic or diplomatic importance, often used for the build-up or resupply of military forces, as was seen during the 1982 Falklands War and the use of RAF Ascension Island as a staging post. Most of the bases are located on British Overseas Territories or former colonies which retain close diplomatic ties with the British government.

Apart from the main operating bases, the British military has personnel stationed at approximately 145 overseas military installations located across 42 countries.

Nobody and I mean nobody show this to @davek

Stationed at does not its a UK only base. Most places we have an Embassy will have a UK military presence nearby. And if a country does not want us, we wont be there. In peacetime anyrate.

Didnt know we are in Canada; probs intelligence stuff. That said, our kid helped put forest fires out there when he was in the RAF. Knowing him, he probably started them mind.

Interesting read if you as bored as me.

Soft power innit? When Argentina invaded the Falklands, they had to overcome 19 Marines. Probably the worst posting in Marine life, so even by their standards, not their best. Was a "Base" though. (At the same time, SAS were in Chile, apparently, allegedly) Maybe someone wanted it to happen.

Numerically, our armed forces are "small", as in boots on the ground, cos the likely hood of a WW2 type encounter is unlikely. Intelligence IS defence; cyber, hacking, stuff I have no idea about, and there is a big doughnut shaped building in Cheltenham stuffed full of nerds, linguists etc who do that pretty well.

The RN is helping to keep oil tankers safe in the Gulf as we speak, (not just Brit ones). Russian aircraft challenge our air space frequently, so the RAF get them to go away; ergo, Vlad knows we are defending, if needed. And more importantly, know they are coming.

Almost 9% Almost 9% of the country's army are abroad and doing work for UK govt and their interests, and working for 'friendly' states - stabilising them and destabilising enemies. It's basically an industry.

Military spending insensately high for a nation of this size.

By the way, this is the man who cowered away from a Liverpool woman asking him why he writes for the S*n...a man who sits in his chair like a naughty school boy when on a train being admonished by a member of the public.
