The UK is still trying to punch above its weight on a world stage as a military force and intelligence producer.

My idea of defence is simply that: defence. We have a colonial military force and Britain is a small western European nation and should have a defence force that reflects it.

Numerically, our armed forces are "small", as in boots on the ground, cos the likely hood of a WW2 type encounter is unlikely. Intelligence IS defence; cyber, hacking, stuff I have no idea about, and there is a big doughnut shaped building in Cheltenham stuffed full of nerds, linguists etc who do that pretty well.

The RN is helping to keep oil tankers safe in the Gulf as we speak, (not just Brit ones). Russian aircraft challenge our air space frequently, so the RAF get them to go away; ergo, Vlad knows we are defending, if needed. And more importantly, know they are coming.

Overseas military bases of the United Kingdom enable the British Armed Forces to conduct expeditionary warfare and maintain a forward presence. Bases tend to be located in or near areas of strategic or diplomatic importance, often used for the build-up or resupply of military forces, as was seen during the 1982 Falklands War and the use of RAF Ascension Island as a staging post. Most of the bases are located on British Overseas Territories or former colonies which retain close diplomatic ties with the British government.

Apart from the main operating bases, the British military has personnel stationed at approximately 145 overseas military installations located across 42 countries.
