Too busy focusing on getting arsey over part of hs2 getting binned (a part that isn’t needed or wanted btw - the whole project should be binned) just for the sake of opposing whatever decision the government happens to make on any given day, than to make any real impact of change.

He is leader of the opposition and the north has been massively deceived and let down with the announcements yesterday. How else should he react?

I live in the north, live in an area that is (or was) going to be affected by HS2.

It takes me 1 hour and 58 minutes to get from Wakefield to London. It's 2 hours 10 mins from Leeds. How is that in any way bad enough to warrant a huge black hole of funding? And 30 years of development and loads of areas and towns been ripped through? It's not, at all.

The part of the line that has been scrapped from north to south, was going to bypass Wakefield completely, cutting through a lovely park not far from me and a village to boot, and adding 20 minutes onto the journey time from Leeds to London, and wouldn't have been done until 2040. At a huge cost. What's the point?

Instead, West Yorkshire will now have money to spend on improving the transit links in the county, which is actually what is needed. Leeds is the only major city in the UK without any working transport links other than bus. The stations are literally only out in one direction of the city too, there's no tram system (the council, which is as bent as they come btw), started building one in the 2000s then just scrapped it.

The journey time from Leeds to Manchester is currently about an hour on the train. By 2030 this will now be 35 mins. That's a massive improvement.

The one area that has actually been hit by this news in West Yorks is Bradford, as that was going to get a new link to Manchester and a new station to boot. That is a shame, albeit not everyone wanted that. However, that part of the line definitely needs improving massively and the two facets shouldn't be mutually exclusive. I believe they could have kept that plan while simultaneously scrapping the line from Sheffield to Leeds as they rightly have done.

But no, HS2 was never about the north anyway. It was just about getting people to London quicker. It shouldn't be happening, it's simply not needed. It should have been scrapped years ago.

I agree on Hs2.

It’s a billion pound vanity project designed on getting the rich too and from london quicker.

We were never going to see much benefit of it anyway, but I don’t see local transport up in the north west improving much after yesterday’s announcement.

For example, it takes me three hours to get from liverpool to barrow where my Mrs family lives and that’s on a good day. I doubt we’ll see any improvement on that in the next ten years.

Most I could see from yesterday involving liverpool was getting to Manchester in 35 minutes. You can already do that.

I just think yesterday was another example of complete contempt for the north. Starmer is right to criticise the government for it.

Come and live in wales mate, HS2 was partly being funded by Welsh taxpayers too yet not an inch of track came anywhere near Wales. The current state of transport here is awful, so bad that I can get to London from North Wales quicker than I can get to Cardiff… and don’t even get me started on the roads from north to South Wales ?

Totally agree. The whole of the eastern leg of HS2 is both unwanted by the people who live here. It’s now said that it it will get to East Midlands Parkway. This is the station I use to go to London, it takes about 1hr 20minutes. HS2 will go via Birmingham and actually add time to the journey. It’s a shambles, not of the current governments making…but Boris should have canned the whole of the eastern leg…..

Hs2 is controversial but too many focus on it just being a bit quicker. The primary benefit is reducing the number of trains on current lines. Put the high speed trains on other lines and it massively improves the performance of local services.

If we're ever going to be a greener country we badly need to improve train links in this country.

Platform 13 and 14 at Manchester Piccadilly are a good example of a bottleneck. A train goes through every 3 or so minutes. One slight delay impacts every train travelling past Manchester into the north.

100% mate

Sorry, I can only speak for my area as that's what I know about. It'll be quicker to get from Leeds to Manchester which is a good thing. They should definitely IMO have kept the new plans for Hull to Manchester line, hence giving Bradford a new station too.

However, I have no issues at all with them scrapping the north-south bit from Sheffield yet the Labour councils are up in arms about that despite the money actually going to them which will benefit people in the right way if THEY spend it correctly.

Starmer had someone come up with a nice little 'rail betrayal' slogan and ran with it. Maybe they should actually ask their constituents what they want, not just go with what they (the MPs/councillors) want instead.

I agree on that. Then again, the plans for HS2 were/are to rip through people's homes and plenty of green space. I used that example of the planned line from Sheff to Leeds that has now been scrapped. Adds on journey time, tore through a village near me and would have displaced hundreds if not thousands of people, plus through loads of nature reserve land.
