Not many people in the world more clueless than this git.

Starmer will be pretty relaxed about stuff like this - it would be panic stations if you got a ringing endorsement from Owen Jones.

Starmer should absolutely keep all his campaign promises - the good ones, that is. And he should take the bad ones and lash them in the bin, at pace. Policy ideas that don't find any purchase, don't cut through, not timely etc just need to be remorselessly culled.

Jones often comes across as hopelessly niaive. Being generous, he's used a polemical approach and made a fuss about honesty. But we all know there's always some change of view, a poorly thought out policy, or spin. Calling out your opponent and ducking own woes is the game. Like it or not.

Anyway, Starmer increasingly strikes me as someone you'd want in charge of a key brief in cabinet, but he's not looking like he's going to inspire an election victory in a hurry.

To be fair, a few academics in social sciences that I know also volunteer or work within the charity sector so would probably have a fair idea, but it doesn’t look good for the ivory tower critique.

Every minister in the U.K. should know
what the minimum wage is.
I know a lot who research on what life is like for folk, inequalities and so forth. They're all being made redundant.

UK academia is a sick place at the moment. Ironically, much of the worst damage stems from a push to be more 'impactful' or contribute to UK PLC. Unfortunately the definition of what counts as useful or important is increasingly narrow or subsumed by whatever flavour of the month strategic policy flies out of the bowels of government.

I just wonder sometimes if this discord suits certain superpowers I mean surely a high level retired politician ( as Clinton did in the Island of Ireland peace process ) could with his wife dedicate himself to brokering this vision of 2states, living alongside each other promoting a peaceful and prosperous life for both communities. These communities are just families, men women and children who want a decent present and future. I am thinking Obama and Michelle of course it would eclipse anything he achieved as potus.
I think much of the Obama team are back in place under Biden.

I do sometimes wonder just how all these ex-presidents and prime minister go about filling their days and finding any sort of fulfilment after they've lost or given up power - other than making money of course!

It is often said, rightfully, that right now we have the worst possible government at the worst possible time.

Unfortunately we also have the worst possible Opposition at the worst possible time.

It won't go down well in up here...

Guess it's a calculated endeavour for the rest of the country. I doubt our white van man in Surrey and Berkshire will attach so much emotion to the editorial.

Whoever the Labour leader and it's subsequent PM, many more vulnerable people will better served by government.

And if that stays in balance the rest can be compromised and concluded over time.
