The Kenwright Generations

Kenwright has always been very much of a "mixed bag" for me. He clearly loved the club, but he did make HUGE mistakes and led us to some of the worst periods in our history.

As the song suggests, we shouldn't ignore history.

Facts:
EVERTON HAD NOT FINISHED IN THE TOP 5 SINCE 1988 - Prior to Kenwright owning us in 1999
MOYES TOOK US TO 4th IN 2004 / 05 - (16 years since 1988)
MARTINEZ TOOK US TO 5th IN 2013 / 14 - Also under Kenwright

Everton were absolutely torrid before Kenwright got Moyes into the club and worse before his ownership...
Whatever we think of mediocrity under both of them, it was FAR better than the alternative of relegation and probable bankruptcy..

I'm not saying these are the best we should hope for, I'm saying that facts matter and that we should not be imagining it was all cups and victories prior to the change of ownership
He was on the board since 89. His malevolent, selfish, narcissistic presence corroded us for a decade before he got full control. A disease.

Before the last cup win in 95. We were regular trophy winners. Winning in every decade up to the 90s with the exception of the 50s (40s were obviously moot)

Since then were currently venturing into our 4th 3rd decade without a sniff.

We've never gone this long with out a trophy at any other point in our history. Portsmouth, Swansea, Wigan, Birmingham and Middlesbrough have all won a trophy in that time. Aswell as Leicester and Blackburn

Kenwright was chairman for 19 of those years.

Good times indeed.

He did a respectable job in the 2000s with the money and budget we have, but shouldn‘t forget the 90s that he was one of the reasons that we couldn‘t keep up anymore with financial power of the league

There is quite a bit of a difference between keeping Moyes for another year and 20 years of Kenwright making decisions at the top of the club.

We shouldn't now make absolutely rash decisions to make up for the lack of them previously, as it could end us in the exactly same position. Nowhere, or worse.

If there is a world class manager out there that wants to come then I'm sure most would think okay. Go for it. If we get rid of Moyes and then start scratching around to see who might be available then that is pretty stupid. I guess we would hope the club keep an eye out on the managerial situation at all times and regularly check in with potential candidates to see if we'd be something they would be interested in.
We should avoid a West Ham thing tho with going for a guy like Lopetegui who was thoroughly successful here in Spain, but was a complete misfit for West Ham.

His worst thing wasn’t investing in Everton and holding onto his train set the real damage he has caused is to generations of Evertonian to have zero ambition and be scared of their own shadows.

I have seen these three phrases appear on this forum.

“It could be worse we could be…”

“Be careful what you wish for”

“Another season of stability will do”

Anyone familiar with Kenwrights body do work will be familiar we these phrases during his tenure especially during the original Moyes years.

He’s created a whole generation of losers and he’s even impacted generations who have seen Everton on top of the world.

If Spurs motto is to dare it to do ours should be never dare and never do.

Be better, demand more and forget Kenwright.
Spurs dare to do what haven't won the league title for 64 years daft comparison.

I do contest though that it was his poor leadership that resulted in the poor budget and therefore the circumstances we were in.
Then belittling the club and the expectations to reflect his poor leadership.

I’m sure it suited Moyes to be here as long as he was. No other club at that time who insisted on winning trophies, pursued him as far as I am aware to be their manager with the exception of Utd and I suspect that Ferguson’s appraisal of Moyes’ ability was blinded by their friendship. Kenwright allowed Moyes full control with no real board pressure to win silverware, because he knew he was running us on a shoestring budget but let’s have this right….

Moyes was far far better for Kenwright than Kenwright ever was for Moyes or the club. Moyes kept us best of the rest in spite of Kenwright’s lack of meaningful funds (in an era where PSR was not the issue it is today) and poor club commercial performance.

What we see now (including the stadium) is the result of Kenwright’s inability and reluctance to make decisions in the best interest of the club rather than himself of his financial ‘backers’. Other than Holden, two world wars (where we couldn’t defend our titles, and Heysel, Kenwright is the single worse person to have ever been involved with our club.

Spurs might be getting relegated soon so it could be worse, be careful what you wish for and another year of stability will do

Don't know where to start with Kenwright. He did us good in lots of ways but what he failed to do nearly killed the club.

For those that loved him and knew him there'll be those that knew him and hated him.

From finding investment (or not) to holding on to his train set the Kenwright years held us back. We literally stood still as a club. Standing still over a long period while other clubs made massive progress on and off the pitch, meant we went backwards.

Also the longest period without a trophy.
