Because someone doesnt agree with you.......nice.

Anyrate, House of Lords eh.

Wrong, roydo.

Read the previous posts before making an incorrect assumption. In a nutshell, this is what it was about:
"...Your post #23:
"...the fact that we are willing to close our doors on our biggest trading partner..."

I took you up on the matter of your saying 'close our doors'. You never made a direct reply, but moved the issue on to tariffs..."

The guy wouldn't answer the point I raised about us closing our doors (which is a totally stupid thing to say, in reality), and instead avoided replying by moving on to tariffs. No logic whatsoever.

But hey-ho, even a Mod gets things wrong sometimes...

So you are suggesting that further protectionism is the way forward for the EU. Another excellent reason for getting away from this sclerotic underperforming mausoleum........
It’s not really further protectionism is it though? We are choosing to leave a trading bloc established to promote easy trade between members which has the basic understanding that it helps all members. To be part of that bloc we have to apply with regulations to ensure an equal playing field so countries (theoretically) can’t dominate it.

So, why should we, or any country at all, be able to turn round and say ‘we don’t want to play by your rules, but we should get the same access?’

It’s not a perfect system, but it’s one that ensures that there’s fair competition which benefits not just countries but the actual population.

And let’s be fair, if the EU is underperforming, what of our own slovenly growth?

zzr45,

I thought I would give you my views on your post #79. I think they may also be the views of others on here.

Yes, we did join a trading bloc in the 1970s, with a view to mutual benefit, as you state.

Over time, that 'trading bloc' has moved into an over-arching Governmental-style of organisation which spread in such a way that it infiltrated and then controlled a lot of aspects of organisations of the member states. That control has manifested itself in how it controls the laws of the countries involved, as well as the rulings made by the judiciary. In other words, since the 1970s (and I voted to join on the terms laid before us at the time) there has been a total move away from the initial precepts upon which we joined. And I believe that move away has not been for the better.

Your second paragraph is slightly askew, I think. We are saying we do not want to be part of the organisation any more. What is needed going forward is an agreement regarding how the UK trades with the other EU countries. It SHOULD result in a mutually agreed process, but we all know how politicians are when it comes to such things. It's not about the same access as before, but a new agreement.

Fair competition? Well tell me about the EU funding for Ford to take part of their operations out of the UK (an EU country) and locate them in Turkey (a non-EU country) in the recent past. Tell me who did that benefit...

As far as performances go, all countries and all economies go up and down. It is unlikely that we will ever see a complete, permanent, flat-line with regard to both.

We've been active in all these processes, and it's our government that has frequently chosen to implement more extreme measures than required.

Another defeat by those that don't depend on the media for reelection.
The house of lords, how many members are being paid directly from EU coffers , either through salary, pension or indirectly by grants for land they own ect ?.
They have voted consistently at every step to impede the government in leaving the the EU, not exactly a bastion of impartiality.
It should be shut down at the earliest opportunity, nothing more than a talking shop for failed politicians, people who have greased the palms of the establishment,or fortunately popped out of one of the broodmares of a descendant of William the bastards crew.
The Libs have 8 MP's and a hundred fossils in the lords how is that representative of the country.
Should either bow to the will of the people and get on with getting us out, or be shutdown, stripped of all powers and kept open as a museum for the tourists to see how we used to live and save the tax payers a fortune.

Morning mate, any chance you could quantify the bolded text and stick it on the side of a bus please? Don't worry about accuracy.

On a serious note, there are plenty of tories with interests that will be enhanced by lowering standards and that's an elected body.

Most of the objections are because the government is attempting to avoid parliamentary oversight, something a lot of leave voters actually voted to restore power to...

not today , we have used that one
even if its a penny i wouldn't pay it to keep this archaic left over from the past in place , not just based on brexit, i have had a long held view,( pre brexit )that the lord has no place in a modern democracy .
i have mellowed over the years i would let them keep there heads these days.

i am in favor of a second chamber all joking aside, dread to think what some governments would get up to if there wasn't a second chamber to counter balance them , just not happy with how the lords is made up.
This government is a joke, as it seems to govern by the seat of its pants rather than having any clear purpose, i have kept out of the EU argument lately because it has gone as i and most others predicted into a mish mass that will end up pleasing nobody in the end.

To be honest, I'm quite happy that people who actually have some exposure and experience of what the EU does and how it works are inputting into this whole thing. Heaven knows, there has been enough ignorance on the topic spouted by the unwashed masses.
