Fair competition? Well tell me about the EU funding for Ford to take part of their operations out of the UK (an EU country) and locate them in Turkey (a non-EU country) in the recent past. Tell me who did that benefit...

As far as performances go, all countries and all economies go up and down. It is unlikely that we will ever see a complete, permanent, flat-line with regard to both.
What ‘EU funding’ was this?

Yeah, funding Ford to take work away from an EU country to a non-Eu country.

It's quite easy to see.

Or perhaps you think that's fine for the EU to do that...?

The European Investment Bank doesn’t only operate in the EU. They also have FEMIB, enlargement countries et al. (+- 10 percent). One of the objectives is the local private sector development. As long as you fulfill the criteria, you can apply. It’s just a cheap loan - that has to be approved by loads of people from all the EU shareholders (the UK ones could have complained when their grievances were still admissible - seems like they were okay with it).

Regardless I don’t think it would have changed a thing, they would have still addressed the factory but at a higher cost. The whole ford restructuring plan (after the crisis) closing loads of factories. The Southampton one (that probably also received multiple loans from the bank), was one of the more unprofitable ones like the one in Genk and a number of other other ones around Europe. The loan might have even been approved long before because it can take a while to get one, before the automotive crisis. In that case a direct causal relation seems more unlikely - not sure about this but it’s not relevant here.

I think it’s actually more likely, that they remembered the loan (as they had no problem with it beforehand) and decided that this was a good scapegoat to pinpoint the failing performance of the plant/Ford as a whole/government on. Even though it’s probably quite irrelevant to the entire outcome.

..in his book, The British Constitution, Walter Baghot said the relationship between the House of Commons and House of Lord was ‘an appeal from Philip Drunk to Philip Sober’.

The Lords need to filter out heredity peers, it need to monitor proper attendance and expel those who turn up for subsidised lunch and £300 per day expenses.

I would get rid of any peer who has previously been a politician........

Correlation does not equal causation. The loan was to expand a facility in Turkey, not to downsize a facility in Southampton. Ford themselves say the two are completely unrelated.

Not for the first time though the wrong end of the stick has been grasped by people wanting to make a political point. They're either stupid or deliberately setting out to mislead.

Not really Bruce. This was a deliberate move by the EU to move work to Turkey as part of its process of bringing it into the EU. You can ignore it, mock it, or pretend it didn’t really happen, but it did.....unless you can show otherwise of course.....

Well, Ford WOULD say that, wouldn't they. Read it up, Bruce. The fact is, they closed the UK operation. The work done in the UK operation was moved to the location in the non-EU country. And Ford took up a loan from the EU to do so.

And to say this: "...They're either stupid or deliberately setting out to mislead..." A disgraceful thing to say. You are a disgrace for saying that, but you will get away with it being a Mod. Take a good look at yourself, Bruce...

I continue to be amazed by those on here who, through their postings, appear to believe that our continuing membership of the EU is a good thing, and that we (the UK) are beneficient recipients of good things from the EU. Go ask Cameron what he came back with from the EU before the Referendum. He came back with 'jack', but tried to dress it up as some kind of massive gain...

Its a forum mate, not an echo chamber.

I continue to be amazed that seemingly intelligent and experienced folk have clung to stuff the likes of Boris and Farage have spouted.

House of Lords? Reckon its a fine revising chamber on balance, though I get why it makes some fume.
