Had a chat with one of the governers at my kids' school this morning. They're worried how the school is going to manage the re-election of the Tories. They are already stretched to the absolute limit. We live in a very poor area and the PTA finds it very hard to raise money, because nobody's got any.

There is a real divide growing between schools in affluent areas and poor areas because of Tory education cuts. The PTA of a school in a wealthy area can hold a fundraiser and bring in 5 figures, easily, and regularly. We're lucky if we get a couple of hundred.

The pub that I have a share in, works very closely with the local school, only a primary with 40-50 kids, but nevertheless the pub has a regular programme of Bingo, Quiz, BBQ, Fireworks etc etc designed to bring people into the pub, but also to generate a community feel. Part of this is regular collections, prize draws and so on to raise funds for the kids. It only brings in small sums, but it’s amazing how they all add up at the end of the year. I previously served as a governor of the school and do understand how it has to use every penny given to it from government or the PTFA. Local shops and businesses will always help, if asked, but as I’m sure you will agree it requires a lot of work and dedication from the governors and the PTFA.....

The Government should pay for education,it isn't a charity that requires funding from a pub quiz.

Fair play to you bud. We don't have a "local" pub, the nearest is 15 minutes walk away and not remotely in the catchment area of two other schools. Nobody on the estate has got money for the pub anyway.

My wife's on the PTA, they do little things like that all the time, cake sales after school, raffles, mufti day (only allowed a small number of those a year) etc. It's a tonne of work. Local shops are pretty obliging but you can only ask them for donations so often. The staff has been cut to the bone, my eldest has two teachers that job share, for crying out loud.

People forget that one of the most compelling arguments made against PR was that it would provide the extremist parties with far bigger representation in seats. People seem to coveniently dismiss that argument now that the UKIP/BRXT vote has receeded, but you can't change your mind on these things according to the flavour of the day.
I don't like extremists on any side. But if a party gets over a minimum threshold then fair play says they should have a seat. I don't believe the British people would let in more than a couple: a disreputable irrelevance

So true. UKIP's representatives in the Welsh Assembly have been exposed as being the largely talentless, fractious, indolent crew that they are. Besides, there are a good many extremists of many hues in the House of Commons at present.

How do you do this in practical terms? Or do you just mean don't kvetch about it in the pub / shop whatever?
Go to an event celebrated by a religion other than your own? A firm I used to work for in the E. Midlands had a very inclusive Divali celebration every year. Invite some Poles round to share a meal having first taken the trouble to read up a bit about their history & culture.....are just two examples off the top of my head. "Kvetch" is a lovely multi cultural word btw.;)

It's tradition in Slavic countries to set an extra place at the table over Christmas for any unexpected guests, so a perfect opportunity to impose yourself on get to know a Polish neighbour.
