The presenter of that clip said "There has been a trend of independent journalists attacked by Putin in Russia, many of them die mysteriously".

This is a wilful misrepresentation of the actual issue, which is that there is indeed a horrible problem of journalists being killed in Russia going back many decades, long before Putin came to power, and more generally that there was a problem of people being killed full stop, due to an inherent instability of post-Soviet Russia. But it's getting better: murder stats are about a quarter now than what they were in the Yeltsin years.

For journos: around 20 journalists would die (not just murdered, but also illness, accidents...or 'accidents') every year from 1992 (when records the West is privy to began). With around 10-20% of those deaths clearly tied with whatever work they were doing. The other deaths were not found to be linked to their work.

And from 2011 that figure has dramatically reduced to about 1 or 2 per year, owing to a general improved stability in Russian society (i.e. the vastly-reduced murder rate & better health & safety) which a lot of folk give credit to Putin for.

That doesn't change Tatyana Felgenhauer being very brave in continuing her important work. I praise and support her efforts in shining a critical light on Russia's politics. The attempted murder of her was very likely not an official one from Putin's men, rather it was an unstable violent man who felt aggrieved at Tatyana for whatever reason, possibly even connected to her radio station being seen as a foreign-friendly liberal voice and he didn't want that in his country. So a tenuous link to Putin's iron grip on power, sure...but not a direct one. It sounds more comparable with the hateful murder of Jo Cox being tied to the Tories and/or the conservative Press, so it would be like RT putting that one on Theresa May & Daily Mail.

Russia, and Putin, are dodgy...no doubt about it. But they're not the ultimate bogeyman they're sometimes painted to be, are in fact getting better, and anyway every powerful country has a bit of dodge about it.

Apologist.

Well firstly, it was covered, as per here - https://www.theguardian.com/comment...r-right-activists-barred-britain-state-speech

Secondly, are you really associating with the thoughts of a white supremacist?

Haha, are you one of the aforementioned 'liberal bed wetters'?

Joking aside, wonder whether CA dabbled in your inlaws' election? They mentioned a recent east European country.

I wear it as a badge of honour ;)

Regarding the Czech election, it wouldn't surprise me. A fair chunk of my relatives have some seriously dodgy (and factually incorrect) views, and I dare say most get their news from the likes of Facebook. I'm not entirely convinced that the Czech political parties, and certainly not Zeman's are sophisticated enough to do this, but maybe those who would benefit from his election...

It links in fairly well with the psychological harnessing of fear driving the right that you posted yesterday. It's all very emotive by definition, hence frequently leading to brick walls in discussions.

Indeed, and it's noticeable how politicians (and the media to a large extent) try and tap into a fear of the unknown. My in-laws have never met a Muslim in their life, yet they fear them and think they need protecting from them. I've said before that a few of them have expressed worries about London, either before visiting or as a reason not to visit, in that they think it's incredibly dangerous and over-run by Muslims. It's silly, and those that have visited had that disproved, yet it was a relative drop in the ocean and therefore wasn't enough to change their opinions, hence they still voted for Zeman.

I don't blame them, but people whose job it is to know better are wilfully misleading them.
