Of course the country has been ruined. When the modern Tory Party came into being, this was the greatest country on earth. A hundred and eighty-odd years of mostly Tory rule later and everything has gone, been sold or been part-exed and even the likes of Scotland tried to make off. They even bear some of the blame for the mess that exists beyond these islands. When the Gibbon of the fourth millenium comes to write The Decline and Fall of the British Empire, Toryism will bear the brunt of the blame.

wow

You mentioned three politicians, all of them centrists who did precisely what you claim your "new" middle is about. You know exactly who I am talking about, hence your avoidance.

What avoidance? And what did they precisely do what the new middle is about? And since when is Boris Johnson a centrist and Alastair Campbell a politician? The only other name I mentioned was Mandelson.

Wrong - I'll embolden the relevant parts where you mentioned them for you (as a sop I'll leave out "John Mayor"):

Remember this? It cost over a billion pounds and was a symbolic Blair-era project (even if its genesis was in John Mayor's time).

The obvious point being politicians have always wasted public money...it's nothing specific to any ideology.

Of course he says loads of nonsense things. It's Boris Johnson lol Do you remember Peter Mandelson? Alastair Campbell? They also talked a lot of nonsense, some of it turned out to be very dangerous nonsense

Again, the three of them - Blair, Mandelson, Campbell are and were all centrists, espousing policies that you have celebrated on that thread.

Mentioning the Blair-era is not the same as evoking the man Tony Blair. And which policies have I celebrated? You mean the paid-for training courses? Ok, but I don't get your point. I can obviously praise one facet of New Labour while criticising another. That is what the new middle is all about.

I honestly think you've trapped yourself in some weird tribal bubble and can't think your way out of it. Bit like Cathy Newman in that interview. You've always posted really good stuff on GOT normally...those tribal-loyalties run deep, man.

Too heavy for me this. But didnt know the UK was a great place to live in 180 years ago, I have to say.

lol

£789 million, most of which was paid for by national lottery grants, the rest from ticket sales.

over a billion in todays' money, and most of it paid for by the working class (as who else buys lottery tickets?).

a colossal waste of public money. and i say that as someone who enjoyed a day out there.

Over a billion in today's money lol.

Nobody has to play the lottery, it's not a tax. I'd consider myself working class and I don't play it, never have. The mrs does though tbf.

It was a white elephant for sure though. Should never have been built.

adjusted for inflation is the done thing when talking about older sums, blue.

the lottery is a stealth tax for the worker class. sure it's an optional one and if you're very lucky you get more back then you put in, but i'm not the only one calling it a tax, it's an age-old debate for lotteries all over the world.

the dome was a nice idea, just should never have been publicly-funded or the entry should've been free (like the Tate galleries mostly are).

Ironically, it was right wing (or neo-liberal) policies that brought down the last labour government.

An illegal war, PFI contracts and NHS trusts, tuition fees for higher education and worst of all the de-regulation of financial markets which crashed the economy and led to the bank bail-out that enabled the Tories to finish the job of Victorianising the UK under the guise of "austerity".

Even Theresa May can see the current model of capitalism is failing and has stolen 3 policies from Ed Miliband already, branded as "Stalinist" in the right wing press only 3 years ago:

1. The capping of energy prices.

2. The removal of planning permission or compulsory purchase of land being landbanked to boost big developer profits.

3. And the latest suggestion of an asset tax to redistribute funds to the millennial generation to help them afford homes of their own.

That same press now describe those policies as "Brave, challenging and in the interests of honest, working people."

Basically, when unfettered capitalism affects their voters in their heartlands, a little bit of socialism is useful after all.

Perhaps, just perhaps, a few more socialist policies might be even better for the country.

However, socialism is dangerous isn't it?

Regarding Obama:

Obama had three of the most retweeted tweets of 2017. Trump didn't make the top 10

A little cult-of-personality building up there.

Minor point, but this would imply, as per the article you posted, that some kid who wanted Wendy's chicken nuggets would also have quite a large CoP building up as well. And I don't think CoP applies here, since it would involve Obama manipulating and controling retweets to enhance his own image, which he obviously has no control over. He was popular among folks. People miss him. He has 2x the followers of Trump on twitter and is more likely to get retweeted because of that alone. I don't think one can read much more into it than that.

agree, but I was more highlighting how the media paint Obama vs Trump (i.e. the former is the messiah). which admittedly isn't a hard sell as the contrast in charm, thoughtfulness & intellect between the two is huge.

when it comes to policies however there's less of a gap.

I think it simply boils down to the message. One is filled with positivity and hope. Another is filled with 'look at me'.

Policy wise it's progress vs regress in the big picture. I wonder how well Trump would be doing if he inherited an economy on the verge of collapse?

Not doing a good job, are they? Britain's doing pretty well these days, must be thanks to the centre-left faction of the Tory government.

Tying yourself in knots here.

This must be some new usage of the phrase 'doing pretty well' that I'm unfamiliar with. How come there's food banks and homeless people freezing on the streets?
