Christ, imagine if a ref was seen clapping nowadays..
Who was it did it at Analfield about ten years ago. Hackett or Halsey spring to mind.
Anyway Frank was a cracking footballer, but his off pitch antics stopped him playing for the top names. Rumour back in the day was that he failed a medical for the RS because of the clap.
Carefree bloke who lived life as he wanted to. RIP.

Saw him play at Tranmere - back in '86 I think. Clearly the most skillful player on the pitch (low bar). I thought he might make a go of management there to but seemingly didn't want to do it. I'm sure many know the reasons, but he didn't seem awful at it. First Hot Shot Lorimer then him, not been a good few days for ex-football heroes!
I hope he enjoys the afterlife (if...) as much as he seemed to enjoy this one.

The Cowshed raised the roof when he had the ball at his feet.

The rs were inches away from signing Worthington, backed out because he had low ( than the norm) blood pressure.
He played on for donkeys years, low BP didnt seem to do him any harm.
Their losss

I remember that. Didnt he jump up or something saying he was cheering because he let play go on after a foul and his decision proved correct?

....that‘s sad news about Frank Worthington. So many talented players of those times who never really got recognition at international level (Hudson, Currie. Bowles et al). I recall him being on the verge of signing for the Reds at one stage & there were lots of rumours why that deal fell through.

He was a talent & a character.
The father of a lad I worked with was one of the RS club doctors at the time. He gave me the full shake-down on why Worthington failed the medical. See tommytowne's post above. But it was put out that he failed because of the possibility of a previous injury re-occuring...

He was a character
I remember Frank doing an after dinner speech at a football tournament, he was giving the winning trophy out and someone heckles,
‘first time franks had his hand on a trophy’
to which he looked up and said,
‘at least You know My name sunshine , and thanks for paying my fee!’
Everyone cheered and the heckler felt a right idiot..
