His radio show was a regular feature of my commute home in 1990's Virginia, Howard Stern in the morning and G.Gordon later.... He had some ridiculously outlandish things to say. Obvs couldnt agree with his politics but for a nut job hard man he was a great entertainer.
I read his memoir, Will, and though I was but a young sprout I could see he was a genuine nutbar.

Obviously he's best known for his Watergate role but we shouldn't forget that earlier, as a special prosecutor in Dutchess County, NY, he was the first to bust Timothy Leary at Millbrook. Then twenty years later and full of bonhomie, he and Leary did a national "debate tour" together. (I couldn't afford the ticket, alas.) Culture war opposites to be sure, but you can always trust a charlatan to recognize a charlatan.

There are now two fewer American writers.

RIP much-loved children's author Beverly Cleary. When I was a young sprout my favorite of her characters, wee Ramona Quimby, set a high bar for headstrong willfulness which I did my best to emulate. Clearly lived to 104. Ramona will live longer.

RIP Larry McMurtry, whose main theme, broadly speaking, was the American West. His books often became successful films but were still much better as books. Dead at 84.
