Hugh McIlvanney a brilliant Scottish Sports journalist has died aged 84, he had a 60 year career and forged close links and friendships with the likes of Busby, Shankly, Stein and Ferguson, something I guess you never hear of these days.

He assisted Alex Ferguson with his biography and I recall him fronting many good Scottish football documentaries up to his retirement in 2016.

He worked on amongst others, The Scotsman,The Express, the Observer and the Sunday Times an absolutely illustrious of which as they say up here in Scotland 'We shall never see his likes again.' RIP
Just heard that on STV .
Must be an English wag doing the auto-cue mentioned the world cup 1966 in his list of commentary greats.

Yes Al somebody is getting things mixed up, he did the report on the match as the Observer chief sports writer which was widely acclaimed, though it was another Hugh,Hugh Johns who did the match commentary for ITV which is easily forgotten after Kenneth Wolsteholme's efforts for the BBC.

Incidetally I got Wolstenholme's autograph in about 68/69 in the old main stand at Goodison, I can't recall if that was where they did the commentary from in those days or he was just a spectator, perhaps @Joey66 would shed some light on that one.

French composer Michel Legrand. His most famous song was Windmills of Your Mind.
I remember trudging round shop after shop trying to find Legrand Jazz with among others Bill Evans and the film score for The Happy Ending on CD when I bought my very first player.Had to wait until you could pinch them off YouTube as Mp3 files.
