I've literally no idea why that myth sticks around.
It’s repeated as fact that the tories are ‘the party of fiscal responsibility’ or ‘party of finance’ and I’ve never heard an interviewer challenge it. On the flip side, Labour are regularly painted as the party of ‘irresponsible public spending’ again with very little push back.
Both statements have very little truth to them but will be repeated by the general population.

Indeed. Astounding really. The Tories have certainly been in power during absolute catastrophic periods, economically speaking.

Hasn't the National debt doubled or even tripled under their tenure ? I mean Starmer ripped Boris apart on pmq's over Johnson saying taxes were down under them. Starmer rightly corrected, while laughing, that there had been 16 tax rises under the Tories.
I mean cost of living through the roof, food prices, petrol prices, energy bills, insurance bills, National Insurance up. Have they got anything right over the economy ? Awaits Peteblue to pop out from down under again...

I'm not sure you can really use that as an argument though, in much the same way you couldn't really use it to have a go at the Brown administration for borrowing heavily to respond to the financial crisis in 2007/8. Governments everywhere have borrowed vast sums to get through Brexit, and with interest rates so low that was probably the sensible thing to do. So raising national debt probably isn't something to have a go on, but the amount of money that was wasted almost certainly is.

Mismanaged government debt, that's certainly fair game too.

Probably right, but you could bet your bottom dollar if it was Labour doing this amount of borrowing, it would be getting far, far more coverage on the TV and National media.

Agree with this, but it didn't stop the tories rattling off the same lie over and over again to get in. The 2/3 years before the 2010 election every single tory repeated it until it became fact that it was a uniquely Labour issue. Forgetting the world "global" in global crash.

The borrowing rate and the debt was climbing long before Brexit under the tories

Just part of the general brainwashing program the UK people have been subjected to for at least the last 40 years.

Quite possibly, I just don't suppose that was something unique to here due to the prolonged period of low interest rates. For instance, this is France's debt to GDP ratio over the last decade. Obviously it ballooned during Covid but was growing for most of the period beforehand.
