I knew a UK colleague who worked for DEFRA, back before 2016 (when my job changed) who got paid extra for working from home. It saves so much money on office accommodation. I think Covid has made the penny drop with Governments and the future will be a mix of office and home working, with desks being shared between staff working on different days to reduce costs.

Output can be clearly monitored remotely.

In 2018 my beloved was diagnosed with the big C. She required surgery and chemo followed by radiotherapy which altogether lasted 8 months. I have had external access to my work emails and files since 2008. However, my cranker of a manager insisted that unless I was physically present in the office - 30 miles away - I had to take annual leave. So on the many days where she was really sick especially during chemo that was the reality. I said I can keep in touch by email and mobile at all times but his response was I couldn't watch emails if I was minding my wife.

An absolute thundering holl;ocks.

12 months later, everyone in the Service was working from home because of Covid unless frontline - Mrs BR and Miss BR are both nurses btw.

There was no loss of quality of service, no citizens losing out because of civil servants working from home.

It led to me getting into ill health for several months. I took early retirement as he had destroyed my enthusiasm and my health.

I have always said that presenteeism is as bad as absenteeism - staff who turn up in the office and spend the day gossiping and clock watching while really dedicated staff worked better than ever from home.

I know there was no diminution in service delivery in our Department once lockdown came in. Yes the endless online meetings were painful, but the work was done, and done well.

Thankfully Mrs BR is happy and healthy and back working for two years - a very strong lady!!

Glad she's doing better mate.

Apparently now increasing inflation is due to the Bank of England. Nothing to do with all that Covid money Sunak gave away willy nilly. Tory MP’s wanting the Bank under direct government control; presumably to bring all their mates in to run it.

I see the scummy Tories are looking after their paymasters again, don't know if anyone can post a link, but the Tories disgracefully voted down a Labour party motion for a windfall tax on the big oil, energy companies obscene profits. Shamefull from the Tory party, but what can we expect, they have nothing in common with the electorate who a lot of, are basically on their knees paying these exorbitant bills during this cost of living crisis, they should be named and shamed. This proves once and for all a Tory does not care about the ordinary person, it cares about big business profits, profits before people. This should have been all over the news stations, but we know why it wasn't. In their pocket.

The working from home nonsense is ridiculous. How can they suggest you can't monitor performance of staff? A half decent manager can easily monitor performance, most jobs have outputs that can be monitored.
Now I’m not trying to be ageist here, but the vast majority of people advocating going back to the office are of an older generation compared to the people who want to stay at home. The vast majority of young people want at least some flexibility.

It’s the old way of managing; rule but fear. If they’re in an office you can control them, encourage them to do overtime they don’t want to do etc. they fear the lack of control they will relinquish if their work force is not there.

And then of course there’s all the Tory landlords that have very expensive properties in city centres that need leasing.
