The working from home nonsense is ridiculous. How can they suggest you can't monitor performance of staff? A half decent manager can easily monitor performance, most jobs have outputs that can be monitored.

the managing partner wanted to get people back in the office for the 'family feel', so people in the office just chat all day knowing that they will get away with it as they said the reason to go back, is to interact, i love seeing how much the chatting winds people up

The owner of the company I work for invested about £100k in doing up our offices at the end of 2019. Oops. He's now desperate for people to work in the office rather than at home. To be fair, a lot of what we do is cooperation and brainstorming and is really fast paced in small teams. But then you have to go away and do the actual work. Which is where working at home is a real boon.

You could almost be forgiven for thinking that our hero, for whom there is no one better, didn't choose these cretins.

The owner of the company I work for invested about £100k in doing up our offices at the end of 2019. Oops. He's now desperate for people to work in the office rather than at home. To be fair, a lot of what we do is cooperation and brainstorming and is really fast paced in small teams. But then you have to go away and do the actual work. Which is where working at home is a real boon.

The £100k is sunk cost and will not change whether you are in the office or not so there’s no desperation on your boss’ part in relation to the investment. It’s as you said “a lot of what we do is cooperation and brainstorming and is really fast paced in small teams.” and if that cannot be replicated by wfh/zoom or whatever, then you need to utilise the office. That‘s the boss’ desperation…..
