Has it become more of a problem now that many more of that generation are getting to the point where they need access to medical services? As people have said it seems to be a cock up that's been years in the making, but surely it should have been uncovered way before now? Christ, I can't do anything without having to show my passport nowadays - how have these cracks developed?

but the culture of disbelief that runs through the Home Office meant she was not listened to.
I like how this has been highlighted as its an issue. The burden of proof should be on the individual, not on the Home Office to prove someone's an illegal immigrant. I get how in this case it's maybe not appropriate as the proof has disappeared or never in fact been provided, but to expect it to be the other way round usually is madness.

The whole thing underlines the ridiculousness of this whole notion that the government are in any way fit and able to 'manage' migration. I'm certainly not sure they're morally up to the job, but even practically the civil service don't seem capable whatsoever.

It baffles me where this attitude has come from, but I do wonder if the anger with the Windrush thing is because they're clearly making a pigs arse of the whole affair, or whether they're deporting people in general.

To say they've been making a pigs arse of the whole affair is to miss the point a bit tbh.

What has been going on is that the Home Office under May were tasked with "reducing the numbers" and have also had their budget cut - therefore they've been looking to kick out the easiest (which is to say the cheapest) people first; hence all the stories about US academics being told to leave, or 80-year old grandmothers, and now the generation of people who came over in the 60s when they were all British citizens anyway.

These are all the sort of people who the state hasn't had to verify their status beforehand (ie: they don't have a criminal record, and have probably either worked or been part of a working family so won't have had their eligibility for benefits checked) and who aren't likely to seriously kick off when the state asks them to leave (because they are law-abiding folk and/or they aren't familiar with the legal system and their rights), so when it comes to kicking them out they are less likely to fight it and have less evidence in order for them to fight it anyway; in any case they are cheaper to get rid of than a criminal who has a lawyer and will try to resist. Even the limited protection that they did have was stripped away in 2014 without anyone noticing (as the Guardian pointed out yesterday).

Of course this is how May (and most of the rest of the 2010-15 Government) operated anyway - so there isn't that much difference between this and for example how they behaved on prison reform (an increase of 38% in terms of deaths in custody) or members of the armed forces being booted out prior to them getting the pensions they had earned (in some cases days before, and when people were deployed overseas) or cuts to policing (another murder last night in London, after two the night before), or any of a hundred other things that the papers might notice when they stop going after Corbyn for having a beard.

Home Office destroyed Windrush landing cards, says ex-staffer

"Most local residents have made the association between migration into Hull, investment and a reversal of the city’s decline. Greater prosperity has had a positive impact on most people in Hull and contributed to a growing and inclusive civil pride in the city. We felt that our visit to Hull showed how regeneration can help improve community relations where its benefits are shared fairly.

A person’s arrival date is crucial to a citizenship application, because the 1971 Immigration Act gave people who had already moved to Britain indefinite leave to remain.".

"The Labour MP David Lammy said: “This revelation from a whistleblower reveals that the problems being faced by the Windrush generation are not down to one-off bureaucratic errors but as a direct result of systemic incompetence, callousness and cruelty within our immigration system.

“It is an absolute disgrace that the Home Office has destroyed these documents and then forced Windrush-generation migrants to try and prove their status, threatening them with deportation and stripping them of their rights.

“This was no accident and the orders to destroys records must have come from somebody at the top of the department. It is time for the home secretary to do the honourable thing, take responsibility for this fiasco and resign.”

He said he noticed a change in approach to these cases after the announcement of the “hostile environment” policy by May, then home secretary. In 2009 and 2010, managers gave case workers and members of his team time to look into cases. “Generally speaking, most Home Office staff want to try to do the right thing and be fair, within the rules,” he said.

But from 2013 onwards, he said, staff were “given no leeway to make a judgment call”. The changed atmosphere combined with staff cuts made it a more unpleasant place to work and many experienced staff took redundancy, he said. The people who remained were told: “These are the rules, stick to them.”

He decided to leave at around this time. “I am so angry that people are being treated in a way which is just abhorrent.”

Lammy should call fro May to resign. A 'hostile environment' 'no leeway' in other words May was saying, 'don't do proper searches you've no time, I need to get immigration numbers down'. She should go.

I see the SNP leader at Westminster has suggested that the Government has been briefing anti-Corbyn Labour MPs. Hopefully now people will start asking how at least one anti-Corbyn former MP got a job that they were manifestly not qualified for.

Not capable since they outsourced valuable departments to private companies looking for a quick profit

Bruce this stems back to the Harold Wilson Government or earlier when the windrush immigrants came over in demand the was no management of migration then, and it's a disgrace for those people and families as they were welcomed, and accepted the British way of life successive governments since then have betrayed those who did not seek passports even like myself - I feel so angry about this as we have let them down big time - LBC James O'Brien show today he more a less blamed Theresa May as a racist - stirring up emotions that the basic logical itinerary was to count them in by name and count people out which he failed to mention - It is factual that May at the home office failed on this like many home secretaries before her, but I agree today in the 21st century this is a disgrace in a computerised digital world unlike when the parents -or Grandparents came over here to do low paid jobs in all walks of life in Great Britain - the fact they were happy not to seek a passport and face this trauma -
It's a disgrace and heads should roll in government but they won't!
You can not blame civil servants who are acting on any governments latest instructions of ridiculous proof of identity when they have occupational pensions etc NI number for over 30 years etc yet being put in detention centres utter disgrace!
One caller also stated it's hard to vote now as no sensible centre party is there to vote for!

Certainly agree with your final point Joe.

If you happen to be of different colour to Theresa May, I would be worried, be very worried if you are of different colour and poor. She has gone out of her way as home secretary and now as Prime Minister to pander racists. Weak and feeble only goes so far as an excuse. Maybe Mays apologies to those effected by her immigration policies could be plastered over buses and driven up and down the the country as well stating, sorry I told you are no longer welcome!

This is all down to incompetence. Governments have come and gone, blue and red, but the same civil service has made an absolute dogs breakfast of this. It’s a bit like the Police, crack down on the easy targets and ignore those with vocal mouthpieces.........

I’ve said before, we always seem to pick on the wrong people yet allow all sorts of criminals and terrorists to remain...

You get that on the whole the country has stated it’s not too comfortable with immigration, right?

Reading the whistleblowers report on how files were destroyed is absolutely baffling. Firstly, if they were such an important resource (which I’m sure they were) why the hell weren’t they digitalised way before 2010? Secondly how inept must management be if those archives were being used at least once a week to realise their value?

Supposed PM and person of detail a spurrious claim. May and her Government, has ended up where it is to changes in 2014 along with a series of speeches on anti immigration rhetoric (hostile), pandering to the false racist narrative that its immigrants that are, taking all jobs, houses, schools, hospital beds and weeks waiting to see a GP, putting untold pressure on the UK etc. Her action and words from her Government have created this alone, pandering to racsist narratives. Now Windrush, the nasty is well and truly back!
