Eve he admits he hasn't a clue ; of course, the fact that he has a wine business in Australia is purely coincidental.

He is a prominent backer of game keeping and hunting. He knows very little about the countryside and quite a lot about about fawning over gentry.
Claimed there was no evidence of gamekeepers killing birds of prey fairly recently, the hairy maggot.

Reaches for VPN etc.

Another load of gormless clatter from this absentee government, and Sky while we're at it.
GDPR has virtually nothing to do with cookies, these rules are under the 2003 Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. PECR was strengthened, a little, by the more explicit consent provisions in GDPR but cookie notifications have been law for almost 20 years.
But heaven forbid minsters and journalists do a little learnin' to know what they're talking about.
Won't make any difference, websites won't bother removing cookie notifications for the UK market vs. the rest of the bloody world, even California has equivalent rules.
Its just tories being tory - make a lot of noise about doing something - actually do nothing, they're not interested in government. They're not even a political party any more, they're just a perpetual campaigning machine.
For the record, cookie notifications get on my tits. But we're stuck with them.

That and GDPR is now the defacto global standard as it's obvious that it makes sense for companies to adopt one approach for everywhere, so it's utterly pointless to try and go it alone.

Exactly, see the climbdown on UKCA/kitemarking. The rest of the world is trying to align with GDPR - there's discussions at FTC and in the Biden admin around a federal privacy law - a lot of states have implemented GDPR equivalent regs. already, as have many other countries over the last few years, Brazil has just brought in LGDP, and even China has just brought in PIPL which stacks up against GDPR surprisingly well (there'll be questions over enforcement of course). This government is completely lacking in subject matter expertise or global engagement skills, hence seeing the good ship Britannia continually dashed on the rocks of reality.

As we've seen in Afghanistan, when you're a big country, people tend to dance to your tune. The single market is very influential in a way that the UK on its own will never be.

Cutting universal credit and stating it would be better for people to raise income by individual efforts...

C'mon, we all know the labour market is messed up at the moment. So many insecure jobs. Now, it's actually a longstanding problem that pay is topped up by the state (the Nu Labour compromise / faustian pact of attempting to get rid of inequalities whilst promoting the free market), but I don't see the opportunities for people to up their income. Until you resolve that riddle, you ain't gonna see folk upping income by their 'own efforts'. Unless you mean a third job. Christ.

This is perhaps a separate debate, but this was always the problem with UC and tax credits and why they are no replacement for stable jobs, social housing or other much more effective methods of support.
