I have no doubt that politicians have always lied, but I yearn for those halcyon days when they put some effort into constructing the lie. Today’s Tories don’t care that they put so little effort into their lies that they are exposed as liars almost immediately and why should they care, their lying carries no consequences. Indeed the English seem to be more attracted to those politicians that lie with absolute abandon than they are to those who seem to try and do the right thing. Standards in our society have fallen so far that people now want politicians who are as dishonest as big business as they think we need a thief to catch a thief.
One of my favourite books is an account of the Tory anti-appeasement faction during the 30s and up until the Norway debates.
It gives a really poignant view of some MPs - Cartland, Amery, Boothby and Macmillan especially - who out of conviction opposed the idiotic policies of their own party and ended up saving the country. Cartland was killed during the retreat to Dunkirk in 1940, Amery saw his son executed as a traitor, and Boothby disgraced himself in later life.
However the idiotic faction remained, and they are still in charge now.
