Even if you strip the politics out of it, which is actually hard, and step back it is a contradictory in recent policy terms. The reaction is also contradictory too. Universitys were actively encouraged and / or required to monitor and police students and staff for possible extremist views. It is, or was, an active element of the Prevent programme.Indeed, and those who actually participate in cancel culture are immeasurably the Tory hive.

Many were arguing Prevent was a danger to free speech on campuses (Liberty, for example). Now people on the left are angry at more freedom to speak, provided it is lawful.
I can't see what might happen when 'the wrong' voices (which depends on perspective) are heard and someone objects if it is perceived to be inflammatory. It's almost a debate that is designed to inflame someone, somewhere of all political stripes, where no one really wins.
Maaaad, political correctness gone maaaaaad.
It's just all so predictably ridiculous. The right have repeatedly used political and establishment positions and infrastructure to curtail genuine freedoms and rights - they're doing it again with this cancel culture nonsense they keep raising - but blame 'the left' (who weirdly they often also seem to say aren't actually left wing) for telling them it's a bit rum to say racist things. The worst part is the supposedly soft left (as seen on here in part) doing their job for them by swallowing the whole stupid rhetoric just because they think some bad leftie genuinely wants them to stop watching Blackadder
Aye Labour have been in power for 13 years since 1979, not been in government since 2010. And in 2021 somehow between Conservative government a liberal coalition and media, it's Labourleft trying to silence free speech..It's just all so predictably ridiculous.
