I'm not sure you can remove the context from the situation.
MPs, particularly centre right/right wing MPs, live through a lot of verbal abuse and threats on a daily basis. Politicians have been milkshaked, Anna Soubry was verbally threatened in the street and some left wing MPs are threatened with rape on social media.
It wasn't long ago that an MP was shot dead in the street by a random civilian with mental health problems.
As others have said, it is easy in the cold light of day, when removing the context and not having actually been there making a split second decision, to pass judgement.
There is every possibility this woman could have been marching up to throw milkshake or some other substance over one of the attendees.
In retrospect the MP clearly would have been better not to get involved, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

She looked like she was intent on doing something, but it's presumed she was "peaceful" because she's female. This in itself is sexist. If it was a bloke we wouldn't have even seen the video.

Put it before a jury. Assault or not? However unpleasant the incident was I suspect that Greenpeace will not put it before a jury because there is more good PR in playing it up. So they can continue to refer to it as an assault without the risk of a jury disagreeing.
The courts would be overwhelmed every day if this incident was classed as a assault.
