I thought it generally happened when it rained heavily and the sewage system was overwhelmed? Is that wrong?
There's legislation that allows emergency dumping to happen at a certain level of rainfall, these private companies jumping on every opportunity to dump untreated sewage the very moment that level is reached is an issue that is contributing to the destruction of rivers

Thames Water nationalisation plan could move bulk of £15bn debt to state

[...] creditors include some of the world’s biggest asset managers, which lent to the company on the assumption that their investment carried the same gold-plated risk rating as government debt.
And thus the cycle of hoard and destruction that is the private sector is complete

The Environmental Agency regulate this. If the water companies illegally discharge then they are prosecuted by the EA.

The environmental agency has been underfunded to the bone and can barely keep up. The water companies also loophole the hell out the legislation to avoid prosecution for choosing the easiest, cheapest and most profitable to their shareholder option

Spot on cut to the bone so the water authorities can do what they want - if this government can not control sewerage in our rivers & sea what chance is there of meeting global warming targets ?

I take it you are an expert in this field and not just someone who spouts the hyperbole?.

I can tell you now, the water companies can't loop hole their way out of it. The buck stops with them even it is proven that a third party is proven to be the culprit. The water company then has to take the third party to court.

I give up, I truly do.

At the end of the day, the problem is not left or right, it is not down to policies and ideas, its that Tominey and her ilk control the country and are running it in what they believe are their interests.

Until they are removed nothing will get better and everything will get worse. Just kicking the Tories out at the next GE does not remove them.

They didn't have sensors switched on for all the overflow exhausts and so the spills weren't recorded and so the spills although obvious in the local environs technically never happened.

It's called marking your own homework. tories are renown for it, the scum (pigs) do it, and the water companies are in on the act. Why not, there is no accountability.

I would not consider myself an expert, I have qualifications in the environmental field and worked on case studies in areas such as the upper wharf dealing with community led action and also with the EA. I'm less involved lately as I'm topping up my qualifications which is too occupying for me to be full time in anything.

The idea that private water companies have behaved ethically and without sole focus on profits regards emergency pump out legislation has absolutely not been my experience, and the testing required to see the damage they are causing often only takes place due to community driven action. The government agencies responsible suffer from a lack of funding from a government that does not desire accountability.

Like I said earlier, there wasn't any monitoring equipment so it wasn't like you say that the sensors weren't switched on, there simply wasn't any and it was down to Joe Public to report it. Now, there is monitoring equipment, the reported spills have increased which is good and now the water companies have to do something about it and I can assure you they will be doing it in the next AMP 2025 to 2030, but as always the bills will increase to cover the expenditure.

Putting politics aside this has always happened under all Governments since privatisation and also while being a member of the EU.

If you think things are bad now then look back and you will see that our rivers and the sea are in a healthier position now than they were in the 60"s when lots of inner city rivers were dumping grounds for industry, agriculture, tipping and the combined sewer overflows and they were essentially dead. There has been a lot of good restoring the environment and the next phase is sorting the CSO"s.

hmmm.

I don't fancy getting drawn into the crimes or otherwise of previous governments, nor being grateful for how great things are now compared to the 60's.

What I see is another means for toad of toad hall to crowbar his way into a position of power and to exploit that position until he is forcibly removed. The dossers at the top of respective companies/industries/ are interchangeable, all know one another, and it's the old boys club hard in action. Usually very tory minded to the point of being significant donors. "Let the market decide" was her rallying cry, and oh boy did her denizens get their hooks in fast.
