Right? I switched on expecting an election announcement or resignation, and got….nothing.

What was the point, can anyone tell me?
Drank the cool aid of Braverman Truss Anderson. Without actually dealing with the division his back benchers are attempting to sow. Maybe Sunak is egging for martial law. In doing this he’s basically just labelled the Rochdale electorate extremists for freely voting for someone on their voting slip, and complained that democracy doesn’t always do what he wants. Says the PM never elected as PM...

In reply to Bruce .
I do think that the UK is far too generous with many of its allowances and freebies given to the over 60s.

Winter fuel allowance , transport passes, free prescriptions etc all should be means tested.
Easy done using income data given to the tax people.
In France people are given a fiscal revenue figure based on their tax return.
The cut off changes from year to year but you only get the freebies if you're below that level.

Have you ever compared the respective state pensions paid out in France and the UK ? Just asking for a friend.

Cost of housing in the UK is huge and growing issue for older people, particularly if you rent and in good health as you move into retirement...

Is that not an incentive to earn less. Those earring more in the U.K. pay a lot more in taxes, the least they deserve is to be treated with fairness……

And also why the Universal welfare state exists - everyone has a stake.

Incentive is a terrible term there Pete, it kinda ignores material inequalities and life's misfortunes such as the potential to become ill and no longer able to work. Which is why the self-responsibility narrative is a dubious one imho.

Can't be specific but in general the state pension here is more generous than in UK.
But then deductions from wages and salaries is also much more.

Yes but to become a pensioner, the said pensioners has had to endure them higher deductions for most of their lives. So that means you'd like them pensioners to be worse off when they retire..

Yes, you are right…..

People with pension income similar to their salaried days don't need free prescriptions and winter fuel payments. No matter how much tax they pay.

To get all the freebies here you need to have a pretty low income. Any working person is above that, if legally employed
I'd rather have my moderate pensions and not need the payment.
