One is life and death, and we simply can't get enough through to get to terms with the need. There is no working double time at weekends for the Surgeon, no timetable of cardiac events. It's apples and pears, and I reckon you probably know that.
And some are suited to the very high levels of education, but not all. I want a cardiologist to keep me going until BMD, I don’t want that fella to be the welder (having a go at medicine) making the cardiologist’s life easier. Uni doesn’t need to be for everyone

See that’s a lack of knowledge, but no problem. Chemical sites need to shutdown every year because of the reactions that destroy columns etc. More apprenticeships paid for by companies is my view, but don’t think the costs won’t be passed on

100% right in what your saying.

Some of the sites i go on now has a mixture of people in late 50's and older and then kids.

Big generation miss of engineers.

She may have 'lived for free'... free accommodation, free bills, free education etc...

That's the problem... nothing is free. What she had for free, was paid for by somebody else. Probably paid for by many people who are far worse off financially than she is.

Wages have gone up for them, significantly, but so have their deductions. Good. Pay for your own way! Pay for your own education. Pay for your own retirement. Pay your own bills!

Entitled parasite.
You're a parody account, right?

Both needed. Get the kids doing what they are suited to.
Y'know my old man actively encouraged me to not do an apprenticeship in anything skilled manual/a trade. He was a bit bitter after seeing industry go in the 80s under Thatcher and being made redundant and ending up never working again (health matters played a role in that longer term).

It feels a bit full circle now when thers huge skill shortages. I completely agree with you though - encourage kids to follow interests, what they're good at and their own path. My wife thinks I'm nuts because I say I wouldn't be arsed if we had kids that they didn't go to uni. Up to them. My life and career changed from going, but it's not for everyone and shouldn't be.

Yes, I have respect for doctors.

I just think the state (taxpayers) should only pay for 'free' education until you finish school. After that, fund your own education.

20 years ago, I'd have thought differently. But, back then, only the best and brightest could go to university, so 'free' education made sense. It was money well spent by the tax-payer for the greater good.

Now, higher education has, for the most part, become a business. Useless courses, high fees, and student accommodation...
What's that?
