House builders make huge profits. For example, they typically report profits of 10-30%, whereas in main contracting if you're getting 5% you're doing incredibly well. Have you seen how much Kier's directors get in bonuses?

It's laughable that you're defending housing companies, as if they're begging to be given opportunies to build good value homes. These house builders charge more than their product is actually worth (many people sell on for a loss) with quality that is so poor and often unfit for purpose. They do this because the regulation in the industry is poor and they know they can get away with it. Help to Buy was widely considered as Help to Sell in the industry, but of course, you wouldn't know this because you're ill informed.

Let's just think about the huge Levehulme planning applications to build houses across Wirral's countryside, coincidentally applied during the pandemic and when house prices were at their highest. The council can fulfill their quota of new builds by building on brownfield or ex industrial sites, but there's nowhere near as much profit in that, so they've tried to slip a few thousand houses in.

So once again the ability of this country to provide what should be a basic human requirement is left up to whether private companies can turn a big profit or not.

Who regulates these companies, Pete? Who has the power to make changes but never does?

I’m not defending house building companies. I’m defending the removal of obstacles that are preventing house building. In terms of building oversight I haven’t a clue, I always thought this was covered by building regulations and the council involved…..

Yep, and that is because of the home builders exploiting loop holes.
1: If there is a certain number of homes being built a certain percentage have to be affordable. In which case the developer builds them in plots under different terms allowing them to avoid the affordable homes

2: they apply for planning with a percentage of affordable homes then, once planning agreed, they claim poverty and say they cannot afford to build the affordable homes, the council relents and as you point out - 4 and 5 bed homes only are built.

Also, let it be known that there are hundreds of thousands of sites approved for homes to be built but, as the prices have dropped the developers have mothballed them.

Greed, greed and more greed.

But as you say, the council relents. They have the power, but whether it’s used is another matter.

School fields sold to their pals for expensive housing.
Cuts to sports funding across the board
Lost generation lose out again as pools and rec centres go to the wall

Are you ready for this?

Buckle up Boyo's.....(just not sports kit...)

Nobody is saying that's cheap however I'm sure a PM has to get around within London and I'm not suggesting the tube. Proper straw man argument you're apparently set on here.

A helicopter compared to a first class rail ticket however? Even with the current eye watering fares you'd be a brave man to suggest a helicopter as more cost effective for inter City travel.

Your first post suggested helicopter travel around the UK, not just across London. Your follow up post mentions only travel around London. You need to organise your thoughts...

I think we can all agree that local travel vrs national travel requires different levels of planning and arrangements.

Helicopters can travel point to point. Trains can't. Transport by train requires more security than trains. I'm sure our security services have their finger on the pulse when it comes to protect our PM.

Organise your thoughts before you ramble a response to me please.

This is exactly what the Tories want. The government is guilt tripping the public in to accepting consequences that should never be put on the table in the first place. It's also a truly terrible precedent to set.

I was browsing Leverhulme's website before and I had to laugh at the fat cats trying to spin their quest of rampant capatalism as a attempt to provide a desperately needed service.
