There are against using your parliamentary office to tout for business, but not for getting second, third incomes.
While I agree with you in principle, in practice it's not as easy as it might seem to ban second incomes. What if an MP is also an author? Do you prevent them from getting royalties from books which might have been written before they were elected? An MP I knew was a farmer - should he have been forced to sell his farm, which had been in his family for generations? There are MPs who are doctors; indeed, at least one MP worked as a doctor during the pandemic; should she have been banned from working?

Having said that, the rules clearly need to be tightened.

I'm sorry, but yes. It's an important job, not something you do part time. Having residual income isn't the same as actively doing work that takes time from your main job.

It’s a disgrace and should not be allowed. If they want to earn more money resign and do so. As you say it is, or should be, an important job. Even our pub manager is restricted by contract from holding down a second job……

And nick clegg goes under the bus, re housing, "there's no failure with 'right to buy' we've seen from this coalition government...." - these are trying to disown the last 13 years. tory mp bob seely.

You might have me confused, because I didn't say anything about banning second incomes. I just commented on the rules.

Personally I think we would be better paying MPs more to do the job properly. I'd get rid of the bars in and around Westminster too and invest in better office space and meeting rooms so they can actually do their job.

You give the current lot bigger 'meeting' rooms, there'll be orgies breaking out like wild fire. So far as the bars go they came in handy when hague tried to oust Bercow, the tories thought they had the numbers for an immediate vote but the labour chaps and chapettes we're having a few coldies at the end of the day and were stirred into action. I honestly thought Bercow was gonna blitz him for that on the walk out. How I do dislike hoyle.
The breaks in parliament are a bit much though, and I'd definitely introduce 'no porn in the benches during parliament hours'. Oh, also, allegations and/or previous guilt for domestic violence (any violence really I suppose) or crimes of a sexual nature mean no access to ministers or lobbyists or advisors and no setting up meetings for companies with mp's or the pm. The wanton criminality and sleaze that floats around these freeloaders is quite the low point of such a supposedly virtuous profession.

I mean they did open Portcullis House for that not long ago
