Callahans Labour government was a disaster. Gentleman Jim ?.Do you not think that the socialist norms of the 70s played a part in the adoption of Friedman's policies in the US and UK? After all, Hayak's work was produced in direct response to the rise of and threat posed by communism. Britain was the sick man of Europe, remember? The Tories got in because the country was in a mess and Labour under Foot was unwilling to see the scale of the problem or provide a less extreme form of medicine than that provided by Thatcher. Remember, the party was so far left that the "Gang of Four" felt they had to leave (funnily enough, I've just left an event held in a room named after Roy Jenkins).
The tories got in because, like me, voters wanted a change from the directionless governance of Callahan.
I can't remember what the tories had in their manefest but I certainly didn't expect to be made redundant twice in the next 3 years. Industry gone, my career and future with it.
I don't think many of the young people, envious of their grandparents would like to have been around in the late 70s early 80s.
