Just watched him talking to channel 4 and was appalled when he stated that government ministers were unconcerned about poverty.

Well done to every person who voted for this vile government, you’re responsible for the deaths of innocent unfortunate people.

To say that they are unconcerned is to let them off the hook a bit; they actively want more poor because they think it will boost competitiveness.

To be fair to him, I don't suppose any minister will know the first thing about individual cases like this, that will be the responsibility of people much lower down the chain.

*rolls eyes*

"I was unaware of this particular case, but I'm appalled to learn about what has happened here. I will see to it that my Ministry investigates, and resolves the matter as soon as possible. It is unacceptable for someone in her condition to be subject to such cruelty, or for family members to suffer in this way in order to care for their loved ones. I believe that Universal Credit represents a better and more efficient way to assist those in need, but my support is conditional on it truly working to improve the lives of those who depend on it. I will do everything I can to make sure that such concerns are addressed before we proceed with fullscale implementation".

It would be better still if he actually believed it.

But he is, after all, a Tory, and he knows that most of those who voted for him will be delighted by his callousness

That quote seems fair enough to me. The general premise behind putting all welfare payments into one makes a lot of sense, but the devil is in the application (as always). I can't say I know a great deal about it, but there do appear to have been a large number of mistakes made in the application of it. Whilst politicians can't be absolved from blame, the civil service will be the ones doing a lot of the application of this, so they should shoulder some responsibility too. Having done some work in a few government departments, the level of input from the minister is pretty small, yet they're largely the lightning rod for any criticism of the service that the civil service deliver.

It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking the Tories are evil, therefore replacing them would instantly make universal credit work, but the civil servants would largely remain the same whomever is in government. I mean what would Labour do? McDonnell has said they would scrap it, but then Chakrabati says it would merely be tweaked (and renamed). It seems a likely stepping stone towards UBI or something of that nature tbh, so I can't see AN Other party scrapping it, and I'm not at all sure that AN Other party would be better able to manage the civil service roll out than the Tories have been, as the people actually doing it will be the same.

Not destroying the lives of the most vulnerable by making them even worse off, and by subjecting them to pointless and indecipherable administrative cruelty, has to be the first and most sacred principle. I doubt you'd just shrug it off or attempt to blame the civil service if it were your interests being attended to so shambolically.

Universal Credit should not proceed until we can be certain that episodes like this will not occur on a wide scale (even if it means those earning over £50k have to wait that bit longer for their latest tax cut). All signs suggest that it will be a disaster, but we're going full-steam ahead because we're governed by a party demonstrably indifferent to whether or not it even works properly. No doubt for many, the program's cruelty is precisely its appeal.

The Civil Service does not set policy. And it's a certainty that behind the scenes, the Civil Service has been screaming themselves hoarse over how poorly-designed and unworkable the whole scheme is - and that they have been roundly ignored by the dillusional ideologues or venal careerists who dominate the ranks of the modern Tory party.

It is just as easy to fall into the trap of thinking that because you once had a nice chat or enjoyed a pint with a Tory, they couldn't possibly be capable of imposing real cruelty and harm.

It is also easy to fall into the trap of thinking that because you once had a nice chat or enjoyed a pint with a Tory, they couldn't possibly be complicit in imposing real cruelty and harm.

That's the dilemma isn't it? At the moment we know that the rollout of this policy isn't working, that much is clear. What we don't really know is why it's not working.

Very much fits into his view as explored in his book he co authored with others 'Britania Unchained Less state, UK citizen have too many protections makes them soft and lazy non competitive etc. Just basic welfare for all. There we are a living example of Conservative Britain and he does not want to comment.

Anyway, Conservative government has been well warned and critiqued about Universal Credit!
