Germany opening its coal mines up again, Bruce ...... Poland has over 300 coal mines ...... North Sea Gas was going to last forever......
Covid & the war in Ukraine has caused a world recession, particularly in Europe - Truss mini budget sent us over the parapet, but the snide budget today is not the answer - I will vote again to get them out - no taxes on the super rich - the money spent on energy we could have nationalised the energy back into governments hands ......

A totally immoral typical budget give with one hand & take back twice in taxes in the future ..... the average worker clobbered - super rich plus Non Doms left alone ...... 12 years of this & we are doomed as a country ...... the LIB Dems played their part in the first place propping the Tories up.......
Eight jobs, Osborne chose to punish the sick & the poor & now we have gone full circle .....

I'm guessing this is to mitigate somewhat the rise in Corporation tax from 19% to 25%, which, when combined with this cut in Surcharge, still makes a tax increase on the banks.
Depends if they are all equal. As with tax law in particular British it's never as it seems, "Perfudious Albion" .

Because of terrible management Pete. They have wasted so much money, locked down too late and wasted copious amounts in the process.

And now hard working Joe's like me have to bail them out again. At some point people just have enough.

Problems happen. It's a governments job to mitigate them. If you cant deal with a problem, move along and let somebody more competent have a go.
The pandemic cost every country a fortune, proportional to its population, and the energy crisis is affecting everyone. However, while there are certainly major challenges to economies, very few are in as much of an economic mess as GB I'm afraid.

Might it be one has a competent government, and one doesnt?

These things tend to rot from the head.

Competent.....well in comparison with the fiasco of the Tories I suppose so.

However, as a retired Civil Servant, I would give massive credit to the strong and intelligent officials across all Departments, who have earned the respect of Governments for decades, and who give advice that is sensible and, more importantly, is heeded by Ministers.

The role of a civil service is to implement Government policies as mandated by the democratic vote of the people in elections. However, it is also the duty and function of the civil service to give sound and resasoned advice as to how such should be inmplemented in the best interests of the people, and to manage the expectations of politicians including Ministers. Sometimes we needed to say "No Minister!!"

My dealings with UK colleagues over the past 30 years were usually very positive, and collaborative. Indeed, we often supported each other in resisting some of the more idiotic Commission proposals.

However, I found that after the Brexit vote, they found themselves completely cast adrift - their advice was ignored by the UK Government as, with a few exceptions, they tried to advise that leaving the EU would be exponentially worse for the UK than remaining. What was really astonishing post the Brexit vote, was the complete lack of a plan for what to do next.

BJ seemed to put all his faith, and the future of the population of the UK in the strong and capable hands of his great friend Trump :-0

What has happened since then has been beyond belief, and I really pity those of you who voted to stay, but also those of you led astray by narrow-minded buffoons to be kind - or perhaps by grasping greedy charlatans who saw opportunities to make millions from deals with 3rds countries regardless of the impact on the wider economy.

No one ever classes aeroplanes who burn crude parrafinn & the increase of flights since 1960 ......no just blame cars gas, & log coal fires ....oil etc

Plus in a big recession - & travel to green conferences in jet planes - debate - then do nothing that produces hot air more than anything-
The main offenders of using fossil fuels don't even attend .....China Russia etc

I find it impossible the crisis we are in European wise the cost of going green to fund it personally almost impossible to fund e.g. - electric cars - how is the electric generated from the National Grid ?

Oh plus road tax will be imposed on electric cars in the future ?

London banned coal fires in the mid 1960s the rich now just burn log fires ......there...

Very good post this.

Even without any background in the civil service it seems very clear that the fall out of the brexit vote has been a great disrupter in the workings of government. Procedurally, or at least the dismissal of normal practice, and also a real drop in the quality of ministers.

I was listening to Hesseltines address to the Oxford Union yesterday, and while I am very much left of centre politically I do lament the loss of politicians from all sides who displayed capability for reasoned intellectual discussion. Now brexit seems to have forced us down a road that could be best described as 'carry on up big ben'
