The fact that there is now someone who is tasked with looking at suicide is a massive plus. Whether it’s a PR move or whatever doesn’t matter. It’s acknowledged that there’s a problem. It’s a start no matter how insignificant it seems. The same Twitterati that are poo-pooing the idea are the same that would be hailing Labour as visionaries had they done the same. It shouldn’t be a political stick with which to beat people with. As I’ve said, I along with others I know, see it as the hopeful start of something to prevent people going through what we have (and even worse.)

Of course that isn’t soundbite politics so can be dismissed completely.
Announcement of a suicide minister on Wednesday and an admission of wide spread benefit cuts on Thursday. I’d laugh if it was on The Thick Of It.

Going down south a lot - spending time with different people, before the political debates come about by someone, you can tell who is a tory is straight away.

A sense of undeserved confidence and respect. That dead in the eyes look, and normally a complete sociopath believing their opinion is the be all and end.

And their group of friends don't strike me as a typical friendship group either, just seem to congregate with each other in some delirious false sense of happiness as long as they look good. One of them will complain about a matter or someone which is not that persons fault but they'll all agree it's a disgrace etc.

Interesting article here about how governments can do a better job of monetising the assets they own, which would bolster their budgets considerably. @peteblue as a former businessman yourself, and a supporter of the 'party of business', what are your thoughts on Tory performance in this area?

All government performance in this area is abysmal and is an area for improvement. Look at all the expensive government buildings in London for instance and the locations of hospitals in cities. Depending on the part of the country you are in, commercial buildings should return 5-10% minimum. There is merit in doing some of this without being silly, and it’s not a one off fix to the balance sheet, but a continual return if managed professionally and not with the current civil service.....

christ, the dehumanisation of people who happen to vote for the most popular political party has reached sad and nasty proportions here:

when you say your political opponent is a sociopathic zombie who has no friends you are excusing yourself from the argument in the most feeble way...you make what you stand for a pathetic laughing stock.

Given the Tories brand themselves as not only the party of business but the best stewards of the economy, why do you think they aren't doing better? (not a loaded question btw, I'm genuinely interested)

Because they, politicians in general, have almost no experience of business or anything other than politics. Public buildings are treated like sacred cows yet always occupy the most expensive pieces of land. Look at the MI6 building in London....
