Freedom of movement is also a two-way street. Plenty of my friends (late millennials, Gen-Z), me included, would love to leave the UK for europe but now can't.

I never hear this spoken about.

You're right, it's very rarely referenced in the debate.

IIRC the pre-brexit figures relating to UK nationals who took full advantage of free movement (ie permanently relocating to another EU member state, or working full-time in another EU member state) were tiny in comparison to those of EU citizens coming to the UK. I may be wrong, but wasn't the retired "expat" community in coastal Spain the biggest group?

I'm interested in hearing more about your position: is it the current state of the UK that has fuelled a recent desire to leave for Europe, or has it been a longer-term interest that pre-dates Brexit?

It very much gets spoken was part of project fear, they need us more than we need them. "You can have cake and eat it" they gloated....

The mantra now is It's the EU fault for not allowing us the freedom movement out of the UK because they have stopped our freedom movement as punishment for leaving.

Yep it's British exceptionalism at its finest and unfortunately you and I or anyone else can't teach ignorance, people choose to be it.

I've had one vote on anything since 2019, if memory serves. The recent leadership ballot. What vote do you suggest you or I can cast right now to change anything? You say "still voting Tory" as if there's a national election every Tuesday lunchtime.

When the next GE rolls around, I'll cast my vote as I see fit, just like you will. At the current rate it will be next May at the absolute soonest, more likely May 2024. Plenty of time for both Labour and the Tories to make changes.
That’s a fair response but I can’t understand how a Tory vote could still be a possibility. What’s happening now is being enabled by the Tory party and MPs. How many people are publicly kicking back?

For me personally, if I haven’t been happy with Labour, I would tend to vote Green Party as do many people I know. In my experience a dissatisfied Tory would still tend to stick with their party due to the lack of other perceived options. Unless you go mad and vote UKIP.

So depressing thinking about Brexit and the lack of opportunities it offers people in all directions. The fact that it was driven by ideological, imperialistic, splendid isolationist and ancient torys many of whom wont be around long enough to suffer the chaos makes me think of the greek proverb:

"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in,"

and reflect on our reality in the post Brexit, financially rotten, competent government bereft, sewage dumping Great Britain:

"A society decays when old men defecate in the water supply from which they shall never sip,"

Perhaps the pre-brexit figures were tiny, but since then the working day changed for many due to remote first businesses.

I will be honest and say that I had a major interest to work and live abroad pre-brexit. But the sole driver's now are the corrupt, inept and distrustful government and no real opportunity of home ownership.

Completely agree unfortunately and you've just described my grandparents thoughts to a tee.

They are 85 and 83. One is having treatment for cancer and in general they both need a lot NHS care. Yet the sheer ignorance or lack of thought of what would happen to the NHS without immigration due to brexit is staggering and frustrating beyond belief.

Indeed it might. It's fairly obvious to see how.

But the public don't want it. And the short-termism of our political system, combined with our abysmal, sensationalism-obsessed media, means that no government will risk such an unpopular move.

Truss did something horrendously unpopular last week (by way of comparison); when she saw the massive negative reaction she changed course, and the media promptly attacked her for making a "U-turn".

If you want politicians to be open about the idea of changing unpopular policies, what is the point in attacking them for changing unpopular policies? All that happens is that they become afraid of changing course.
nah, she was warned repeatedly weeks and months prior. not white-washing that.
