Momentum seemed to be of the opinion that all they needed to succeed was to appeal to their core voters. The reality is that they need to appeal to those who perhaps supported Cameron in the past and are turned off by the direction the Tories have gone in since Brexit. Instead of that happening not only did those people still believe backing Johnson was better than going with Corbyn, but also a lot of Labour voters jumped ship as well because of him.

When the opposition go extreme you don't win elections by fighting it from an equally extreme position.

Labour didn't restrict their campaigning in 2017 or 2019 to "their core voters" - that is why they expanded the number of people who voted for them over the previous four or five GEs. They came up with proposals (sensible proposals in 2017, a bit less sensible in 2019) that were realistic and which fitted into a broader message of reforming how the country is governed and making it more in the population's interest than those at the top.

People voted against Labour in the two Corbyn elections because they were lied to.

I’m more inclined to agree with this. Very few people would have read both party manifestos and made a choice from that. Remember Johnson knew all he had to do was say ‘get Brexit done’ repeatedly and made sure he avoided any public scrutiny or gaffes.

Would have to say that the opposition cannot be entirely absolved of blame, even though I think they are playing against loaded dice

It's kinda convenient to assume that the whole world was duped and Jezza would have led us all to a socialist utopia if not for the duplicitous media. 2.5 million fewer people voted Labour in 2019 compared to 2017. The Tories didn't get much of that as their votes only increased by a few hundred thousand. The Lib Dems, however, gained around 1.5 million extra votes in 2019, which clearly points to weaknesses in appealing to the remain bloc.
