Commiserations for another dreadful tragedy

I simply don't understand how a supposed right to bear arms can be more important than the lives of children.

Americans may be interested to read of the responses to UK shootings in 1987 and 1996 which hardened already fairly firm gun control measures in the UK

A young Andy Murray survived Dunblane. Sixteen pupils and one teacher died.

TBF our record of firearms legislation isn't that great when you examine it - as you say, almost all of it came from tragedies when the governments of the day were forced to amend legislation to do something but in such a way that shaped the next outrage. It is basically a superficially effective form of tinkering with a piece of legislation (as the gun control lobby in the US tried) and it probably reached its limit (or at least the point at which the political class would not allow further change) after Dunblane. The only thing left to ban after that were single shot rifles and shotguns, both of which the landowning classes enjoy shooting with, and so no further bans happened after Derek Bird or that lid in Plymouth's murders.

There are other mad bits in it too, most of all Section 5 which as it stands could be used to allow a Home Secretary to give - without any further Parliamentary approval - authority to anyone in the country to carry automatic rifles, repeating rifles, rocket launchers, grenade launchers etc.

In essence it is a mess.

It will. It's in the Constitution. The right to bear arms. They will fight it to the death. It'll never ends because the big arms manufacturers, like big pharma, are way too powerful..

I get that, I fully understand how it works. I think I was just speaking out of frustration and hope that at some point there will be a shift in the discussion of the 2nd Amendment

White guy can drive to town and kill 23 people in El Paso because they are Latino. Thoughts and prayers!!

Access to guns to kill kids, or people who are racially offensive or religiously offensive is, for some godforsaken reason, the price we pay for the privilege to be 'murican.

The NRA is holding a rally in Houston on Friday. DJT will be there. My wife and I are seriously considering going there to protest.

Be safe if you do go.

TRump, Abbott, Crenshaw and Cruz all due to speak

Is it awful of me to think its a shame one of these mass shooters didnt rock up there.

It makes me so effing angry that people even go down that line of thinking. "Make the schools safer"????? Like, put all the responsibility for what is happening on the places of learning and not at the hands second amendment apologists?

Arm the teachers? I know it's gun nut trope with no substance, but really, how would this even work?
What level of training are you giving teachers? 'cause a day on a shooting range wont help 60yo Mrs. Mabel the maths teacher armed with a 9mm pistol go head to head in CQC against a 15yo with an AR15 and a shotgun.
Even then, are they supposed to then open fire on a child? Because active shooter or not, even a trained firearms holder like a police officer or soldier could freeze when faced with the prospect of firing at a child, never mind someone who has chosen to dedicate their lives to educating and protecting children.

Anything, absolutely anything except letting go of their 'toys'
These people who somehow idolise and preach about how much they love their nation and government, yet will shout for their right to 'defend' themselves against it.

D***heads.
