It makes me so effing angry that people even go down that line of thinking. "Make the schools safer"????? Like, put all the responsibility for what is happening on the places of learning and not at the hands second amendment apologists?

Arm the teachers? I know it's gun nut trope with no substance, but really, how would this even work?
What level of training are you giving teachers? 'cause a day on a shooting range wont help 60yo Mrs. Mabel the maths teacher armed with a 9mm pistol go head to head in CQC against a 15yo with an AR15 and a shotgun.
Even then, are they supposed to then open fire on a child? Because active shooter or not, even a trained firearms holder like a police officer or soldier could freeze when faced with the prospect of firing at a child, never mind someone who has chosen to dedicate their lives to educating and protecting children.

Anything, absolutely anything except letting go of their 'toys'
These people who somehow idolise and preach about how much they love their nation and government, yet will shout for their right to 'defend' themselves against it.

D***heads.

Indeed - I mean look at Aaron Salter; defending a store (easier than a school), a 30-year police veteran and he managed to hit the shooter twice. The shooter had more armour, heavier weapons and murdered him along with several other people solely because of their race.

We can all (and should all) salute his extreme bravery but putting him in that situation was criminal.

Wouldn’t mind seeing a mass shooting at an NRA event tbh.

The cold blooded murder of children in school is a uniquely American problem.

Utterly backwards.

Honestly I don’t know what I’d be like if I had a kid that I had to send to school every day with that fear in the back of my mind.

Every. Day.
Tbh it is terrifying, it is upsetting having to have these talks about these shootings over and over with your child, because is either me telling her or she finding out through her friends. This afternoon I have already hold my daughter so tight, hoping she never becomes the victim of such crime. It just horrible that parents and kids in the US have to carry on with this fear.

A couple of years ago there was broader support for stricter gun control laws. As of last week only 52% were in favor of stricter regulation. I expect that number now goes up as a reaction, but honestly it doesn’t matter until our joke politicians get their thumbs out and actually work on the problem. They’ve had plenty of reasons to do so in the past and didn’t act. This one will get headlines, but in cities like Chicago, these numbers are daily occurrences, just not in schools. It’s a crisis in many places, but our leaders do nothing to make it better, and as a result it’s accepted as a fact of life. It really is depressing.

So many of them, the Republican party is full of fkrs. Sold outs to the gun industry and the NRA. And many Americans have become so used to these tragedies that politicians don’t really feel enough pressure to do anything about it. I’m disheartening at the thought that this tragedy will come and go like many others. Gun violence is a daily occurrence in this country and the US government and our population has become acceptance of it :(

Another great speech by the good Senator Murphy and he is right, Congress is doing nothing. This is an existential crisis that’s having a negative impact in the youth of this country. There have been more studies release in recent days verifying the levels of depression the youth in this country are feeling and with all these shootings not wonder they are depressed, stressed and scared.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz described the Uvalde shooting as "truly horrific", but said gun reforms were not the way to prevent such crimes.

Speaking to reporters, he said that restricting the rights of "law-abiding citizens... doesn't work. It's not effective. It doesn't prevent crime."

He said "going after felons" is what prevents such crimes and he criticised other politicians for trying to "advance their own political agenda" by calling for gun control.

He added that from past experience, armed law enforcement on campus is the most effective way of keeping children safe.

"We don't know the details of what happened at Robb Elementary School, but there will be a lot of time to examine what steps could have been taken proactively to enhance the safety and security of the school right now," he said.

What an utter coward
